Military Attire

My fiance just joined the Air Force and he really really REALLY wants to wear his dress uniform in the wedding. I'm all for it, but we're having a hard time figuring out what his groomsmen should wear as none of them are in the military. It's going to be a summer, more casual wedding, so we were thinking they could wear khaki suits, but would that look weird? Would it look better if they wore navy blue suits, the same color as his uniform? I've been seeing this trend of the groomsmen wearing navy blazers with khaki slacks which is cool, but I don't want them too casual because they might look sloppy compared to the groom. What should we do?? Oh and if it makes any difference, the girls are wearing burgandy knee-length dresses with orange and yellow flowers.

  • I would go for the navy suits for the groomsman to keep things formal, but that's just me.

Khaki suits would go just fine. I actually think the navy on groomsmen would look odd.
  • My dad was in the army and he wore his navy blue uniform when I got married and he looked great along with suits that the groomsmen wore - my groomsmen wore black and it was a summer wedding and it looks great - navy blue works at a neutral and its definitely okay for the groom to stand out!
  • When you have civilian gm you just put them in tuxes or suits.  Don't worry so much about them matching the uniform.  Just go with the look of the wedding.  Think of it this way your bridesmaids aren't matching you right?  So his groomsmen don't need to match him.  A man in uniform is always going to stand out.  :)

    Welcome to military life.

  • Is he wearing just dress blues (like he wears to work at times) or mess dress (tux version)?  If dress blues, the groomsmen can wear navy suits or maybe even khakis, as long as they have ties.  If mess dress, they need to wear tuxedos.

My FI is wearing his mess dress, so our party will wear tuxes.
