Can Two Different Sized Rings Be Soldered Together?

My engagement ring was ordered in a size 7 because my FI didnt know what size i was. Kay jewelers sized my finger and they said a size 4.75 should be good. Obviously, it got resized from a 7 to 4.75 cuz my fingers are so tiny. Two weeks later, a diamond fell out of my ring. Plus, the ring was still a little loose. We took it back and they said the diamond fell out because they resized the ring more than two sizes so the diamonds loosened up. And they cant resize it anymore cuz they cant guarantee that it wont happen again. So after being engaged for 3 months and only having the ring on my finger for about a month because of the all the repairs and what not, im kind of confused. The jeweler put a ring guard on the ring. And i hate the fact that its a brand new ring and my finace paid all that money for it and it still dont fit. But my question is, the jewler said we will custom size the band when we get it. And he said that when we solder the band to the engagment ring, the ring would fit fine because the band will "hold it up." Im fine with that. But is it even possible to solder two different sized rings together? Should we just take the ring back and order the same ring but just ina  customized size? The jewler said we could and that the money would be credited to my Fiances credit card, but we would have to open up a Kay's credit card. What should i do?

Re: Can Two Different Sized Rings Be Soldered Together?

  • I persoanlly would go into Kay and get them to re order a new ring. My girlfriend did that when too many stones were falling out due to re sizing. (she also got her ring from Kay) They finally went in and made it known how upset they were and they completely ordered the same ring in the right size and just placed the original stone in the new ring. This is something you will wear for the rest of your life and I personally wouldn't settle for two different sized rings soldered together. Just my two cents.
  • Thanks. My FI and I will g to a better Kay's location. Im hoping that well be able to order a new custom ring without paying so much. After spending all this money on these rings, there should be no reason why i should be wearing two different sized rings. I thought i was just being picky. Glad to know you guys would order a new ring too. Because my FI is telling me to just settle.

  • I know my girlfriend didn't have to pay for the second ring. It was re done for them because of so many diamonds falling out and being lost. If anything it would have cost them more to continue to replace those diamonds than to swap it for a new ring. Best of luck!
  • I would NOT solder your rings together. They lose value instantly.

I agree that you shouldn't have to settle for 2 different size rings. But, I would absolutely not be paying for the new ring. You can try going to another Kay location if you think you will receive better customer service, but you will pay the same at either location because they are a national chain. But regardless, I don't think you should have to pay for anything. I would blame it on the person who measured your finger when you had the ring resized before (because obviously they measured wrong...) and I would not leave until they have ordered you a new ring free of charge. There is no reason you should have to pay for a mistake they made. That's just the way I see it.

The new ring *should* cost less than the original did because it's a smaller size, presuming you order the exact same ring in your size.  smaller size = less gold.  It could be a SIGNIFICANTLY lower cost.
  • My fiance gave me his mother's wedding ring...I'm a size 4.5, she's a size 7...so a very similar situation. My fiance didn't want the band to be cut to be resized (his father designed the floral motif on the band for his mother), so we purchased a simple 14k gold wedding band from ebay, had that cut down to my correct size and had that soldered  INSIDE the thicker original band...the ring fits perfectly, the solitaire diamond is secure, we actually added value to the ring by adding the extra gold weight...you might have to take it to a fast fix jewelry place instead of Kay.
