dress! please vote :)

i am getting married january 8th, 2011 in the midwest. i have started shopping for gowns and all the dresses i have liked are tea length. i am specifically gaga over this justin alexander. but wondering if it will be totally out of place for a winter wedding. thanks!!!

Re: dress! please vote :)

  • I voted yes...but really I think what you need to worry about is the location of the where you will be wearing the dress....are you going to be warm even though your dress is short? Because in all honesty when it comes to "rules of a wedding"...the only rule that really matters is what YOU want and reflecting your personal style. If the dress is your style and it fits the style of the wedding then it won't be out of place...no matter what month you're geting married in. :)

  • I voted yes, and then thought better of it.... ditto PP about warmth (esp in KC! Burrrrrr) but also consider your location in terms of style- tea length dresses are SO.CUTE. in garden weddings/ rather informal settings. Not so much in big churches.

  • First let me say I grew up in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas so mid-west is all I know. Winter, especially in the mid-west, is more traditional in the 'heavier' floor length - IMHO. (in my humble opinion). You really wouldn't want the airy dresses that are more associated with spring/summer and tea length just doesn't make a lot of sense for the season.

That being said - screw tradition! This is your wedding and if you like the dress, WEAR IT!

  • I love it!  It looks so vintage.  If you're worried about it being too cold, wear a cute bolero or little fur shrug, I think that would look adorable with that dress!  Also, I would skip the open-toed shoes.  Very classy!

  • I think a tea-length non-wedding dress would be okay but if you're set on an actual wedding dress, go long. Shivering is not very sexy. My friend got married in Montreal in January wearing a long-sleeved, below the knee dress. Not my style but she loved it. It was a casual wedding though.

I would try to find wedding boots, a bolero or wedding sweater (mine's cashmere ivory BCBG with beading on it that matches my dress) and gloves, if you're the cold type. Pantyhose help too.
  • I am in Minneapolis, so I know winter and I vote for the dress but if and only if:

You have a bolero/shrug AND something furry and coordinating on hand for the day.

    You wear closed toe shoes.

You consider putting a nice warm mid-thigh or knee length layer under it (like silk long underwear.

You have some resistance to/experience with cold weather. If you come from KC, you probably do but some people who live in cold climates are still weather wimps. If you are, just admit it and forget this dress!

All that having been said, the dress is beautiful!!!!

I say wear what you want - but just as an FYI - that justin alexander comes in floor length too - I tried it on :)  I think that with a stole or wrap would be AMAZING for a winter wedding!!

  • I LOVE this dress!  So pretty.  I'm from WI...and I think tea length probably isn't a good call in winter.
  • Having said that though, I agree that if you wear a bolero or something and closed toe shoes, it would be much better!
  • I voted yes because I think you should get the dress that you love!

  • Love it! Tea length is the new trend so go for it! Be comfortable and buy what you love.
  • that would look so cute with a white or even red fur type short jacket thing

  • I am thinking marilyn monroe or ginger rogers. so sweet.

  • Wear it with a fur stole or a cute bolero, some closed toed pumps, and some thick-ish tights?? It's adorable!! As far as being suitable for a winter wedding, you know your own tolerance of the cold - so you're the best judge of if it would be appropriate or not!
  • So I think you should get the dress! However, what are you bridesmaids wearing? You probably would want them to wear tea length too if you are? So keep that in mind. The good thing about the dress is you won't have to drag it through the snow, if there is some! I am from MN and you never know in MN what the weather is going to be like. Get what you want. You probably won't even be outside all that much anyways!
  • I think the dress is super cute!  Just not for a winter wedding.

  • Cute dress! I agree with the pp, make sure you are comfortable, and warm most of all!
