alterations

i just bought my dress from davids bridal. i want to get the halter top altered to a sweetheart style. david's said they can't do that type of alterations, so i am going to start making calls. does anyone know how much i should expect to pay for this?

I had a straight across strapless altered into a sweetheart, and that literally took the seamstress all of 2 minutes.  She didn't even charge me for it because it was honestly just 3 swipes of the needle.  (I should mention that she had already completed $200 worth of unrelated alterations, so its not like she hadn't made money already.)

Now don't hate me for saying this, but I feel like going from halter to sweetheart might be more difficult.  My reasoning is because the halter dress is meant to be held up at the neck, where as strapless dresses are built to stand up on their own.  The alterations you're looking for might involve adding boning to the bodice for support and that just sounds expensive.

If I were you I'd shop around and get a lot of quotes before settling on one seamstress / tailor.

    Good luck!

  • thanks! i called one lady, and she quoted me $45! i think the material is padded enough that it will stand up on its own (or i'll have to stuff the heck outta my bra!). this quote was from a person, not a company, so do i need to look into alterations licenses  or some sort of guarentee that if she screws up my dress, i'll get refunded?
