taking pictures in bridal salons

Just wondering what the general trend is with bridal salons allowing you to take pictures of yourself in the dresses...

I have only been to two different places, one with my MOH and Mom where they encouraged pictures, and one 3000 miles away from them, by myself and was told no picture taking allowed (uhh but how do I show them what I look like in the dresses?)

Most salons don't allow you to take pictures of dresses so you don't take the picture to another salon and try to find it cheaper or so you don't have someone to replicate the dress for a fraction of the designer dress cost.  Also don't be surprised if they don't tell you the designer or the style of the dress.  It's done for the same purposes.

 I would like to know what it looks like in a photograph...it's like looking at yourself from another perspective, rather than just in a mirror. What if you want to compare dresses later on...not pricewise, just for how it looks on you. That's kind of crazy. I can understand why they wouldn't want you to though. Not looking forward to dress shopping now if I can't even take pictures.

Behold the internet age, where you can access pictures of dress <em>and</em> who designs them. And hey, you can even <em>email</em> them to someone to replicate it.

A good seamstress usually needs more detailed pictures than you can get online, though, so it's still an issue.

If being able to take pictures of the dress is a concern for you, call around to salons before you go and find out their picture-taking policy.  Then you can only visit the ones that allow pictures.

Yeah, its not too hard to figure it all out online, the one that allowed photos wouldnt tell me anything other than price (so I peaked at the tag when the woman was grabbing other dresses) - however the one that did not allow pictures wrote down detailed info (designer, color, model#, price)..

<div>Yes, but most brides don't have those model bodies.  Therefore dresses look different on everyone.  Just because it looks good on the model doesn't mean it will look good on her and OP was saying she wants pictures of herself in the dresses, not the models.</div>

You still won't have a picture of YOU in it. That's kind of the important part.

Drives me nuts when places don't let you take pictures! Partly even so I can remember what I looked like. I'm hoping this might be a changing trend though, when I went dress shopping for my sister's wedding two years ago this big bridal store around us they wouldn't let us take any pictures, this past winter when we went for my wedding dress they let us take all the pictures we wanted.

Maybe they're figuring out that with camera's attached to pretty much everything these days, it's too hard to enforce that sort of rule.

screw that i wouldnt buy a dress if they wouldnt letme see how i looked in it on a photo...and id definately want to know what designer it was.

I do not believe that any of the salons I went to allowed pictures.  It was annoying (esp. because even after I'd bought the dress, there weren't any pics of it online), but I understand it.  Thankfully no one hid the designer from me--I personally wouldn't have bought a dress if I didn't know who designed it.

That really does suck.  I've never had a problem with shops allowing me to take photos.  One suggestion I have though is if you can get alone in the dressing room pull out a cell phone with a camera or use a camera with the flash off and sneak photos.  You could even have someone who is with you look like they're texting or something on their phone and sneak some pics while you're showing everyone.  They may not end up great pics but at least you might get some.

If a place rips out the tags so you don't know who the designer is, DONT buy from them.  That is shady business practice.  I had some places that let me take pictures, others did not.  I even had one tell me it was because the designer didn't allow pictures to be taken at shops- total BS.  If you really want pics, you can always ask the receptionist if they allow them when you call to  make an appt.

I guess this is standard behavior, but for their paying customers it really sucks. My dress shop wouldn't tell me who made the dress or send me a picture of it until I paid for it, and then after I bought it I didn't get to see who it was made by until my mother in law to be picked up from the store for me. It's ridiculous. I understand why they do it, but talk about alienating your clientele...
