wedding dress measurement appointment -- HELP!

I have selected my wedding dress and this week I have an appointment to have measurements taken.

1. Should I wear shoes of the same height that I will wear at the wedding?
2. What measurements are involved?
3. Will I be totally unclothed (except for Spanx and bra) as they take the measurements?
4. Need I wear a strapless bra, or can I wear my everyday bra?

The wedding is 6 months away, so I have no idea what actual undergarments (type, size) I will be wearing under the dress except for Spanx.

Thank you!

Re: wedding dress measurement appointment -- HELP!

  • 1. Yes, just in case, though it may not be necessary.  But if they're trying to get the length at this appointment, then you'd want them.

    2. Definitely bust-waist-hip- that'd be standard for sizing.  If you're having a dress tailor-made, they might take additional measurements depending on the dress- arm length, inseam to get the skirt length right, etc.  If you're just doing measurements to find out what size to order (how most bridal shops work- you find the size that fits best and alter from there), it'll probably just be bust-waist-hip.

    3. You should be able to wear clothes as long as you're not wearing anything bulky, but it's probably slightly more accurate to take it without them on.  But if you're uncomfortable undressing down to spanx and bra, you shouldn't have to.

    4. Wear a bra that approximates the amount of support you want to have in your dress- probably your best-fitting bra.  If you're not wearing a bra or have a poorly-fitting one on, you may end up with an inaccurate bust measurement.

    1. Yes.

    2. Chest, waist and hips.  If it's hollow to hem, they will do a few more from your neck to the floor, from your hips to the floor, etc...

    3. No, no... you'll be wearing your clothes.

    4. No.  They'll take your measurements as is.  They can put cups in the dress later so you don't even need a strapless bra.  Mine was measured for my chest with a bra on and then ended up being taken in a little.  Don't worry about undergarments until actual fittings of your gown.

    Enjoy!

In my experience (I currently work at a bridal store) this is how it goes:
#1- You should preferably wear THE shoes you will be wearing at your wedding. If you don't have THE shoes, wear something the same height for sure. This is how they will accurately judge how much of a hem you need.
#2- Bust, waist and hips. They will measure around the fullest part of your bust, smallest area of your stomach (the "natural" waist) and the fullest part of your hips around your butt.
#3- Most places dont make you COMPLETELY strip down, but yes, to your bra and underwear to get the most accurate measurements.
#4- You should preferably wear THE bra you will be wearing on your wedding day. This is how they will know what size to order you (if you're wearing a super padded bra on the big day the size may increase, etc)
