Ball Gown Wedding Dresses

is the ball gown silhouette still in style for young brides? i want to wear a ball gown wedding dress wen i gt married bt kina think ppl will think its old fashioned.

Re: Ball Gown Wedding Dresses

  • I don't think it's necessarily old-fashioned.

It just depends upon the kind of gown you're looking at.

For example, I didn't think I'd like something classified as a "ball gown".  I wanted something more A-line.

But I tried on Maggie Sottero's Juliette, and it's technically a ball gown.  I loved it!  I don't think it's crazy poofy, nor do I think it's old-fashioned, but it is bigger than what I was originally looking for.

Just shop for what looks good on YOU.  Some may look great in ball gowns, and others maybe not so much.  Don't worry about what is "old-fashioned".

  • I knew I didn't want, and wouldn't look good, in anything fitted through the hips, so I went for a lot of A-lines and ball gowns. In one store I tried on some ridiculously large ones, and I think they looked very modern (Maggie Sottero and Mori Lee make great ones). I ended up with a dress that's somewhere between an A-line and a ball gown, I love it and I don't have to worry about getting hot and having my dress stick to my lower body.

  • I thought I wanted an ball gown until I tried one on...  Way too much dress for me.  I ended up wiht an A-line with just enough poof to make me feel like a princess but not too much to be overwhelming on me.

Try them on and see what you think!
  • There are many modern ball gowns. Like the pps have said though, try one on before you set your heart on having one.
  • Btw, if you LIKE ball gown, who cares if it is in style. It's what you like that matters.

I ended up buying a dress that is from the 2008 Casablanca line. I don't care if it is dates by 4 years. I liked the dress.

Do what you like..but I agree with others, try some on first. I looked hideous in ball gown cuz I am soo tiny. I was lost in any ball gown dress
  • Definitely not, i think it's more appropriate to wear a nice traditional ballgown dress. And I bought a ballgown(http://www.inweddingdress.com/style-bc573.html) for my wedding. Some of my friends told me I should go for a slimmer type dress when I was shopping for my dress, but I love the princess type dress! Or you can go for a nice A-Line style dress and wear a petticoat under to give it more fluffy.
  • i thithink  ball gown style is the classic wedding dress style, go for it. even kim kardashion wore the style in her doom marrisage to the basketballer.

it will look nice on every body type
  • If you LIKE ballgown, go for it.  Its not old fashioned.

However, I thought I wanted an a-line or even an asymetrical waist trumpet style gown.  Put on a million, absolutely terrible on my body.  Tried on ballgowns...more flattering.  I was NOT going ballgown, lol.  Tried on Pronovias Benicarlo with ruffles, feathers, a belt, etc...a more modern take on a ballgown, and voila!  It was my dress.

Keep an open mind, try on a few different styles.  But no dress is really old fashioned.  If you want to be technical, lace, slim fitted dresses are in...lace is old fashioned, but they are really popular now.

  • It all depends on what you like, and how your body looks in one.

For example, I have an extremely hourglass shape to my body, which makes anything BUT a ballgown look ridiculously inappropriate for a wedding (it's also why I don't wear dresses in my daily life).

But if you put someone like me in a ballgown, the hourglass turns from 'come hither' to  timeless elegance.  It really was a no-brainer for me.  I either turn up at my wedding looking shockingly gross, or looking like royalty.  Hrm....

Do what makes you look amazing.  Boiled to the basics, that's what everything is about.
