Bridesmaids Picking Own Dress

So I am having a rainbow wedding so each bridesmaid will have a different colored dress. I know that the popular thing right now is for the bridesmaids to pick their own dresses, with the bride picking the color and style.

Would this look to disjointed if the dresses had no element to tie them together?

Re: Bridesmaids Picking Own Dress

  • I had all of my bridesmaids pick their own dresses, but I did have the style (short dress, but everything else was up to them) and the color picked out. The 'rainbow' idea can work, but I would tie them together in some way so it wouldn't be awkward. I think it would be really distracting for all the bridesmaids to be wearing totally different outfits.

  • I've seen the rainbow thing done before with the same dress. If you're not having the same color, I would atleast have a similar dress style and all the same length so it looks tied together.

  • It would prob look better if they were the same style and same style of shoe.

  • Thanks for the input. I was thinking the same thing, but I am really matchy-matchy so I wanted to see if it was just me.
  • If you're doing different colors then I think they should be in the same style.  If you're doing the same color, I think different styles are okay.  That's what I did.  Different colors and different styles would not look very pulled together imo.
  • Try a convertible dress by two birds or Victoria secret, it's multi colored option, sme dress, but can be styled however the bridesmaid wants
  • If I was doing a rainbow color scheme, I'd ask the girls to get the same dress just because the colors are already making things different. Just my 2 cents!

  • I agree with PP-- different colors should be of the same dress, but different dresses should be of the same color.
  • The other thing you could possibly do if you want to let them pick their own dresses is tie them together with them all wearing the same, neutral color sash.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I  think that the rainbow wedding idea is a recipe for disaster and it will end up being very complicated. If you are "matchy-matchy", then how will you get the colors for the guys to be exact matches if the girls are just doing their own thing?

You may want to appear accomodating to your bridesmaids, but it could be a nightmare which rewards you with some really awful pictures. It may be "popular" to let bridesmaids pick out their own, but all that means is that there are either a lot of laid-back brides or there are a lot of disappointed and frustrated brides.

Of course there could be both.
  • I actually think you can do the rainbow effect with different styles of dress as long as you then have many common elements.  Every bridesmaid has a different shape, and to force them into the same kind might not be the best (I think it's fine if your bridesmaids are all the same general shape.)  The dresses do have to be the same length though, otherwise it would look too incohesive.

Some ideas for similar style elements:
    1) The same hair fascinator (maybe feathers or flowers?)
    2) Sash
    3) Same shoes
    4) Same jewelry (can't go wrong with a pearl necklace!)

The more similar elements, the better :)

  • I was in a wedding like this- the bride had custom jewelry made for all of us to pull it all together.  We all had on diferent dresses but all had feather necklaces.  It looked great. She go the jewelry made from a place called jushora based out of nyc.
