Pronovias alterations

Has anyone ever been to the Pronovias flagship store in NYC? I have an appointment there next month - there are many gowns that I am in love with and want to try on, and I have a good feeling about finding my dress there. However, if I need alterations, do I HAVE to have my gown altered there? I heard something about a flat $500 fee for any alteration, and I'm guessing that's not including the cost of the actual alteration(s). I would much rather just take the gown to a seamstress closer to where I live.

  • You might want to ask on the NYC local board.

  • I bought my dress at the Pronovias flagsihp store in NYC and am currently having my alterations done in store. The 500 dollar flat fee covers everything. In other words no matter how many things you need altered, no matter how many fittings no matter what needs doing it is just $500. I chose to go that route after doing some research into costs of alterations in NYC. I would not have saved much if anything, and I really didn't want to have any guesswork.

E.g. At my first fitting tehy decided to sew in cups, add a seven point french bustle, have the strap adjusted and moved slightly and take the dress in. This is all covered by the flat alteration fee. After my second fitting if I need more changes, this still comes under the flat alterations fee.
  • Thanks so much for the info! I wasn't clear as to whether or not the $500 was a flat fee for everything like you said, or if there would be other alterations charges on top of that.

My Pronovias gown just came into the store, and it fits absolutely perfectly--exactly the right length, just right at all the curves... in short, aside from having cups sewn in, I don't have to have anything done. As I'm 6'0 tall and a size 4/6, this was TOTALLY not what I was expecting--usually, I have to take my regular clothes to be tailored because they rarely fit me correctly. If the shop lady tells you that your body measurements are already pretty close to their standard sizes (as mine did), and if you didn't find the sample dress to be drastically out of proportion (aside from size), I'd say to maybe wait on the alterations package until you get your dress. $500 is lot of money to put down for what might turn out to be minimal work. However, if you've got unusual proportions and know you're going to want to make significant alterations, $500 might not be bad. My tailor is charging $45/hour just to put cups in my dress... and that's not counting the cups themselves. if you're anticipating major alterations, those kinds of fees will add up pretty fast.
