How to bustle a tiered dress?

Hey everybody!

This may be more appropriate for the DIY board but I'll ask here first! :)

I plan on making my own wedding dress.  I like the tiered/layered fabric style skirt... the one thing that is puzzling me is how folks were going about bustling those style skirts for the reception?  The more I think about it, the more I think that bustling it would ruin the look of the dress... but I can't wander around the reception with 3' of fabric trailing me either.

So if anybody has any photos of their tiered/layered dresses all bustled up... or any recommendations on a detachable train that doesn't look.... detatchable.  :)  (THAT part I may have to ship off to the DIY board!)

Thanks everybody for your positive input!

  • I would definitely talk to a seamstress about this if you're unsure of how to do it. I'm sure a good seamstress will have had previous experience bustling this type of dress, and will be able to point you in the right direction.

  • I would almost be tempted to go into a bridal salon and try on a dress with that style. Once in the dress ask them some general questions such as how a dress like this would be bustled. They should be able to show you the different ways it can be done and with that in mind you should be able to go from there.

    You might also google it.

  • Briana, you won't believe this, but I went into a bridal shop the other day and they had absolutely nothing with a tiered/layered skirt.  Nooooothing, lol.  I'm gona keep trying, I have tomorrow off!  Thank you!

  • My dress was tiered.  It was much harder to bustle than anticipated.  I originally thought we could just fold some of the layers under, but it looked lumpy and horrible.  Instead, we created a 20+ point bustle that kind of turned the back into a bit of a flower.  Instead of trying to neatly hide layers, we created a bit of a messy, couture look but picking up the layers in an uneven manner.  It was totally free form, but very pretty.
