Navy dresses - black tuxes??

My bridesmaids are wearing navy (well, marine from David's Bridal).  I've had my heart set on navy and gray for our colors (with ivory as the base color for the invitations), and I was hoping the guys would wear dark gray tuxes, but I can't find them anywhere =/.  We looked at Men's Wearhouse, and the only gray one is very light and we don't like it.  So I guess my first question is, has anyone found charcoal gray tuxes anywhere?

And secondly, if we have to go with black, do you think that would look weird?  We found a black tux we like... I know for sure I don't like the vest and tie to be the marine color, to me that doesn't look right. So we were looking at different combinations of black and gray/silver vests and ties.  But who should wear what?  As in, the groom looking a bit different from the groomsmen, and the fathers wearing something else.  Any suggestions/photos of your wedding with these colors or anything else would be greatly appreciated :)  Thank you!

  • We are using the same color dresses from DB,  and getting black tuxes from American Commodore (NE Ohio chain).  The guys will wear ivory shirts, and a navy textured vest with a striped tie.   My FI is wearing all black- except for an ivory tie.  Our fathers are also going to be in black/navy, but with a different tie (I bought a few at Macy's).

  • Have you thought about a suit instead of a tux? I'm sure you could find lots of suits in beautiful gray colors.

If you end up going with black, I think navy vest & tie would look very elegant, personally.

  • It will look great.  IMO, tuxes should only be in black, which is the traditional and classic color.  I agree that I probably wouldn't like the navy vest combo, but I think the dark greys will look great.  That's what we had, with DH wearing a lighter shade and different style.  The dads just wore black vests for us.
  • Black and Navy is just fine! Have you considered having the men get a nice charcoal suit? With a vest and the right tie it's a fantastic look, and something they'll be able to wear over and over as charcoal is suitable for weddings and funerals and whatnot. Just a suggestion!

I agree if you do tuxes I *think*  I'd do black with the grey you want as the vest/tie, but honestly, go to the shop with FI and have him try a couple of combinations and see what you like best- sometimes it's surprising!
  • I agree with PPs about charcoal suits.  They're very debonair :)

If you choose to go the black tux route, I think silver vests would look awesome with the blue dresses.  If you want FI to look a little different, he could have a black or  ivory vest.

Do you have an accent color?  Maybe FI could wear a vest in that color.

  • My sister is doing navy dresses. The groom is in a white vest and tie, the groomsmen are in grey vests and ties.  At least that's the plan as of now , ha! They will look great I think.
  • There is a reason you cannot find gray tuxes.
Tuxedos are black (and SOMETIMES a very dark bluish black that essentially looks black, but that's rarely ever worn.)

You could do a gray morning suit which is the daytime equivalent of tails, but only if your reception is starting before 5:00.

You could do nice gray suits.

But honestly I think the black tuxes will look lovely.

  • I am having Navy BM dresses and the guys are wearing Midnight Blue suits with Red vests and ties from Jim's  Formal Wear. I asked my consultant about matching the suit color to the dress color and she said not to worry about it bc if the shades are not a perfect match it will make the BM dresses pop. Jim's website has a tux building tool so you can see what it will look like. http://www.jimsformalwear.com/tux302_suit.htm

I didn't like the black tux with the Navy vest and tie, so I'm going this route. I was just at a wedding and they did black on navy, and I am sticking to my guns.. I dont like it.
