Lacing Up Your Dress - Be Careful

This is my PSA to all future brides. Make sure that the person lacing up your dress (if you have a corset style) actually KNOWS what the hell they are doing so your dress actually looks the way it's supposed to on your wedding day.

I was looking at my wedding photos this morning, and to my devastation, there is not only a lump near my butt where the laces end (which gaped progressively through the day, visible in the pictures) but it's actually only tight as it should be at my waist and loose at the bust AND the bottom. My MOH tied it in a single knot at the bottom, it came loose and the panel is sticking out it where it came undone. I feel intense rage and I've been crying, and it's ridiculous to be mad at her, but I am. I know it sounds crazy but when it's your perfect dress sand everything else was so great, the realization that the one tangible thing (photos) that I have from that day are disappointing because my dress looked awful and I looked awful too.

Don't simply have your MOH or Mom do it for tradition's sake. Get your photo op sure, but have someone who actually cares or knows how to do it properly if they don't. Six bridesmiads and my mother and not one of them thought to mention that  the panel was sticking out of the back of my dress.

Re: Lacing Up Your Dress - Be Careful

  • I definitely recommend having the designated person watch a video on YouTube about how to lace up a corset back before attempting to do it to the back of a wedding dress.

Sorry that happened to you :(

  • PS- also shocked no one at your wedding (even your photographer) thought to give you a heads up

  • I had my mom do mine - but the seamstress showed her how and I made her watch a dozen youtube videos on it.   Thankfully she did a great job.  It's definitely not like lacing a shoe!  I'm sorry this happened to you.

  • So sorry! I can't believe no one would have noticed and told you! Your photographer for sure should have pointed it out. My cousin's dress wasn't fitted right because David's Bridal sucks and wouldn't take it in anymore for her. Her photographer constantly motioned for her to pull her dress up when her bra was showing on the side.

I am so glad right now that I have a zipper and not lacing. I originally really wanted lacing, but the dress I fell in love with had a zipper and buttons. I'm worried about bustling it, but my seamstress showed me how and she color coded it so it shouldn't be hard for my MOH to figure out.
