Alterations recommendations for Wedding Dresses

Hello Fellow Metro DC /Northern VA/ MD (DMV) Brides,

I have two wedding dresses (one for the ceremony; one for the reception).  I visited Nordstrom's at Tysons Corner recently since as a card holder, I receive In-store alterations discount and wanted to get fitted, see what works was necessary, and obtain price quotes for both.

For my ceremony dress, I was given a quote of $430- $450 for the following modifications:
  • side seam
  • hem + layer off
  • bust repair
For my reception dress, the price was $320.00 (after the discount) to do a basic french bustle and take in the dress.  I decided to proceed with the reception dress since it was the second dress and I wanted to review the quality of their work.

I was a little on the fence for the ceremony one.  My Mom + friend thought that both prices were too high + that I should continue to research/shop around. The Nordstrom rep assured me the price was competitive. I would believe that Metro DC/VA/MD would have more of a price range and options. I am just not sure what is normal for the regions area

I have to decide soon on whether or not I will have them alter the other dress.

I appreciate hearing your experiences with Nordstrom alternations; receiving vendor recommendations (and who I should steer away from); and your experiences on what are  reasonable prices?

Thanks.

Re: Alterations recommendations for Wedding Dresses

  • I was lucky that I didn't have to have any length removed. However, I had the princess seams on the bust taken in - that was $60. To shorten my halter straps was about $20 and another $20 to put several hooks on the back and on my bra to secure it. All was at David's Bridal. Hope that provides some perspective!
