Snarky Brides

Some people are jerks.

I don't know if any of you have come across this blog post yet or a story about it. It's getting a little bit of notice here on the interwebz.

Clicky

I know it's kind of long, so just skim it if you're interested. It's a blog post from a mother whose 5 year old son decided he wanted to dress up as Daphne from Scooby Doo. She describes making sure he truly wanted to be that (since kids change their minds frequently) and the reaction from other Moms at his pre-school on the day he dressed up. She then expresses her feelings on the way they reacted and commented on it.

I just think it's sad. As a grown adult with a child, you don't have to like the idea of this or may find it strange. But FFS, have enough tact to keep your mouth shut about it, especially in front of the kid.

Thoughts?

Re: Some people are jerks.

  • I think close-minded people are just that, close-minded. They can't see past their own opinions. It's sad.
  • I hate ignorant parents.

I hate that sometimes, parents make fun of other people in front of their children.
  • I applaud that mother.  The rest of those judgey, stupid moms can lick my nuts.

  • It's unfortunate that those women are parents. Disgusting. There was a thread on Married Life (the nest) about one of the poster's kids not getting any candy because he wouldn't say 'trick or treat.' Ok, except the kid had autism, I think, and the mom explained this to the non-candy-passer-outer, and the candy lady still wouldn't give the kid anything. Bitch.
  • That's sad, he's a kid - let him dress up as whatever he wants and keep your mouth shut about it if you don't like it. It's kind of like the parents who would make snide remarks about a little boy taking dance classes or playing with dolls because it doesn't fit into their idea of what boys should be doing (play sports and GI Joe). It's just dress up, or an activity or a toy to a kid, nothing more IMO.

    Tee hee.

What I find most disturbing is that this costume, while they may not agree (stupidly) that it's gender appropriate - do you think they could acknowledge that there are plenty of other costumes children could wear that could be much more offensive?

  • Omg I just finished reading it, I love this mom "Thirdly, I am not worried that your son will grow up to be an actual ninja so back off." She's my new hero.

Kudos to that kid's mom!  Throat punches (borrowing someone's awesome term) to the mean moms.

That kid totally rocked that costume too.
  • Child costumes I find more offensive than Daphne from Scooby Doo:

  • This comment breaks my heart:

    Bravo for this post.

I also have a five-year-old son. We use the word “love” in my house all the time, so last year, when he told his best friend that he loved him, I thought, “How sweet. It’s great that my boy knows how to share his feelings.”

The next day, my son told me his friend’s parents decided they should nolonger play together.

Aren’t we past this point? Can’t we sit back and let our children be who they are, and rejoice in the fact that they’re happy?

You have a lucky little boy. Excellent job.
Hate and intolerance breed the same. I hate that a wonderful holiday event like a costume contest was ruined by a few Mom's who can't convince their narrow minds to keep their narrow mouths shut.
    Posted by ccdaisy
Unfortunately, those with narrow minds tend to have wide, gaping, stupidity-oozing pie holes that they can never keep shut.

I can't wait for this kid to grow up to be Brad Pitt and return to his HS reunion.
  • Wow AATB those are pretty inappropriate and disturbing costumes, the look of glee on the kids face in the first one scares the crap out me.

And Celles that comment is so sad :(

    This.

My favorite was when she said something like, "I don't worry your kid is going to grow up to be a real ninja."

JESUSFUCKINGCHRIST. It's bad enough there's one group of these dummies, but another? And 5 year olds at that!
If I saw a kid dressed as "The Situation" I wouldn't find that funny either.  To allow your kid to dress up as someone from a television show where all the personalities are routinely getting piss drunk and making poor decisions - well, THAT is a poor decision.

Seriously. The fact that your (not your) kid would even know who The Situation is, is bad enough.

Hey they could be 6 year olds. LMAO.

I just said 5 because that's what they look like and it's a nice, sturdy number.
  • I freaking love this Mom - that's the kind of Mom I want to be. Plus her son totally did rock the outfit.

I hope that someday a kid won't hesitate to wear a costume like that because he will have no fear of being picked on.

  • AATB - Those are horrible, and they disgust me. Same to those moms.

Celles- That is so sad. Those parents also digust me.

Why is this world full of so many horrible people?

No SHIIT!  My parents never watched bad television in front of us kids.  My gosh.  I love KUWTK but I would never watch that with children in the room.  No way.

  • What's even sadder to me is that he knew what some people's reactions would be before he got out of the car and into the preschool. At 5 years old, I had no inkling of the hate some of the population possesed, but this kid knew. And he knew right.

Exactly. This is part of the reason we own a DVR. There is no need to be watching shows that are inappropriate for children in front of them.

Yes so true - good point. It's so sad that a 5 year old already feels like what he's doing isn't "normal". Not cool

  • People are stupid.  It's a costume, for chrissakes.  As in fantasy.  As in pretend.

Ha. Did you get suggestions for both Spongebob and Alvin and the Chipmunks singing that song? How appropriate for this thread. ;)
