WWSBD? Re: Noisy Neighbors

So, I live next to some four-plexes that house some less-than-awesome people.  Last night at 2 AM there was a screaming match between 3 women.  We had the windows open since it was so warm and they woke up me, my husband, and my baby.  I was pissed and tried to call the non-emergency police line for the precinct a few blocks away after the fighting went on for more than 10 minutes (30 total).  Unfortunately, the non-emergency line is only for business hours.  I didn't feel that this warrented a 911 call, but I don't know.  I also do not know what specific building or unit the fight was in.

How would you handle this situation?  Would you call 911?

Oh, and bonus, a second fight happened at 4 am between a different group of people.  Thankfully only DH and I woke up for that one.

I would call the non-emergency line right now and ask them. They'll probably tell you to call 911 next time and make a complaint about the noise. The cops would then visit the house and tell them to quiet down, make sure there's no DV going on, etc.

I think that's what would happen here.

EDIT: That's really frustrating that they are waking your baby with their fighting.

  • If people are yelling for an extended period of time, and there is any hint that there might be violence, I think calling 911 is warranted. Maybe you could call the non-emergency number during business hours and ask them what to do if (when) this happens again.

  • That sucks, I hate noisy neighbors. Is there a leasing office for the four-plex you can call and talk to a manager or something? Obviously not at 2 am but like today? I wouldn't call 911 over something like that but I'd want to follow up with someone in charge to see what they could do about it.
  • I probably would have yelled at them to shut up.  Yeah, I'm that neighbor, lol.

But if it continued to be a problem yeah I would have called the cops.  I don't think that any ruckus or yelling in the witching hours of the morning is appropriate and if it's happening there is probably some undesirable reason for it.  Plus the neighbors would never know it was you.  I'd have called the cops and told them to come and check out the disturbance, for sure.

  • I'd call 911. Here, the 'non emergency' line flips over to 911 anyway, so it doesn't really matter.  They tell you to call 911 for anything that needs a cop/animal control/firefighter/etc.
  • I would call 911 if the non emergency line is down.

  • Ditto PPs, I would call the non-emergency line and file a complaint. They cops probably won't be able to do much, but they might be able to basically tell them to shut it.

If it happens again I'd definitely call 911.

  • Thanks everyone!  I will call the non-emergency line tomorrow to ask.

Sorry for not participating in my own thread.  First TK ate my post, then my baby started crying, then my sister came over...  so many excuses :)

  • Hm, I think in that situation I would just call 911, and when they answer tell them that it isn't urgent, but you need it to be taken care of.  That way they know to tell whoever is on duty that there is no reason to go tearing across town, or neglect a serious situation because your neighbors are fighting.
