Credit card question

Do you use your credit card to purchase things online?

I just got back from the bank to change my savings account over to a new savings account, and the guy who helped me noticed that I had purchased lots of stuff online and through paypal the last few months (WR of course!).  He says when you use paypal, the person can see your credit limit - and mine is relatively high, at 7-thousand.  He says it makes me more prone to ID theft and was trying to convince me to open a separate checking account for my online purchases.

It sounded like a major pain in the ass to me - and I've only ever used my credit card to buy things online.  I've been doing it for years.  Do you?

Re: Credit card question

  • I use my card online and have never had a problem. At one point, I had two cards though and one I used strictly for online purposes; it helped me make sure there was no fraud.

  • Hmmm.  That doesn't make sense that they could see your credit limit via paypal.  I have been using my credit card, and my debit card, and a store card or two to make purchases online for years and have never had a problem.  I do check out all accounts online frequently, so I'm fairly sure I would catch any fraudulent activity quickly.

  • I have never heard of that before. Credit cards are so much more secure and you have more protection through them than via debit cards or PayPal.

  • That doesn't make any sense because the point of PayPal is to protect you which is why I use it for everything (not linked to my bank account though, it's link to my debit and credit cards).

Sounds to me like that was a sales pitch so he could hit his new account quota.  But I could be wrong?

  • About them being more secure - that's what I thought too.  And I pay for the bank's ID theft protection too.  The websites are secure, that I purchase from.  I'd never heard before that whoever I buy from on paypal could see my limit.

  • I've never used PayPal, but I'm wondering if he's right about the credit limit thing. That seems a little weird, especially since PayPal is so popular as a form of payment (you'd think a lot of people would take issue with that).

I've never had a proble ordering online, but I do always make sure it's a secure site.
  • Yea.. that sounds like bull to me. I use the same credit card to purchase things online all the time, and have not had any issues. As someone else said, thats what Paypal is for- as sort of a buyer protection. Why would they tell merchants your credit limit?!?

Anyways, I saw your post on FB about his comment. His choice of words would have annoyed me too.
  • Sounds like he was just being an obnoxious sales person.

When I was a poor college student, I was disputing a charge of about $36 after my debit card got stolen.  I fought and fought with my bank.  At one point, I was there and the person "helping" me tried to talk me into opening a savings account.  They have a $300 minimum, and they charge you $30 for every month when you're below it.

I looked him in the eye and said "Dude, I have $14 in my account.  I'm disputing $36 with you.  Do I look like I have $300 to stick in your stupid savings account?!"  He said, "Um....probably not?"

Then he helped me when I closed my account there, promptly after finally get my damn $36 from them.  When he asked the reason I said "Because I had to fight wiith you for 10 weeks over THIRTY SIX DOLLARS and in the midst of that you tried to talk me into opening a savings account I couldn't afford, is that a good enough reason?"

I was past being nice at that point ;)

  • Yeah I think the banker might have been pulling your leg to get you to sign up for new services.  The whole purpose of paypal is that all transactions will only show a user name or first name/last name.  I've never seen numbers in my transactions on there, not even a credit card showing up as xxxxx8790 or something.  (I also just went and looked at my own account and some funds I just received from eBay and couldn't see any such info - it just gave me a name and an amount.)

P.S. I learned that with all these new overdraft protection things, that it's actually better to not sign up or opt out.  If you do sign up, you're still charged a fee whereas if you're not signed up it basically declines (like a credit card) if you don't have enough $$ in your account.  That's what I read through my bank, anyways, so I opted out of it.
  • J&K you kick so much ass.

Stacey - right!?  On top of this checking account crap the guy was a douche bag.  He was kinda hitting on me too.  Gross.

So I did a little googling and they're all telling me that no, you can't see the credit limit unless they have your account password.

    That douche.

  • I only use CCs for online shopping. And frankly it's a lot easier to get money back from my CCs b/c of fraud than my bank, so I would never use a check card for online shopping for that very reason. I think he was just trying to sell you stuff.

Ditto this. I would just present it as "Earlier this week I spoke to X who informed me that PayPal was not secure to use for online payments and encouraged me to open a secondary account with your bank. I spoke with Paypal and they assured me that his information was not valid and that they were secured. Are you aware that your associates are giving out faulty information?"

I did this with BBT when I deposited our house check. The lady was completely right, but the corporate associate I spoke to thanked me for double checking so that they are aware of what branch employees are doing.

+1, he was lying and deserves to be reported.

I run several businesses and we can't see customers' card limits, we can only authorize a card, or charge it.

In general, I'd recomend never using a debit card for anything online or really anything at all other than ATM access for that matter; if that card were to be compromised, banks can be a real bitch about reversing the charge in a timely manner and of course are more than happy to charge you bounced check fees if you were overdrawn between the time you noticed the issue and when they processed the chargeback for a fraudulent purchase.

There are a few credit card companies who allow you to generate one time use card numbers in their web portals, those are the absolute best for shopping online; basically you go to their website, log in, have it generate a card number for you and you've got maybe 30 or 60 minutes to use it, then that card number becomes invalid.  So now if that website mishandles the card, gets broken into, etc., doesn't matter, the number was only good for one purchase.  I think Citibank, Bank of America and Discover offer this service but not sure.  I use a Mastercard tied to my Ameriprise retirement account that gives me 1.5% cash back into the retirement and they don't offer this service so it's been a while since I've used one.
