Romance Novelage

I have been reading free romance novels on my kindle.  One of them is a gay romance novel I discovered 10 pages in.  (I thought Joey was a girl at first.)  I've never read one before.  It isn't bad, just lots and lots of penis and grabable butts.  What do you think about reading gay romance novels?

Re: Romance Novelage

  • I'm...uh... going to say it: I didn't know these existed.  But, I try to avoid the romance novel section at all costs.
  • I pretty much think any romance stuff is hot if the characters are likeable. Boys and girls, in any combination can be rather attractive.

  • I can't say I have, BUT I am currently addicted to that show the L Word which is a lesbian romanace drama on Showtime. It comes free with Netflix and I have to say there is not too much about it different than regular romance issues all people have save for a few lesbian 'rules' I was not privy too as some one who dated in straight circles.
  • Lesbian rules?
    Do elaborate.

  • I guess I didn't know these existed either... but why shouldn't they?

I probably wouldn't jump to read one though.  I did go to the theater to see Brokeback Mountain - and while it was sad - I couldn't relate to it.  Some people can, and there's definitely an audience for it - so why not.

Probably the same way some people like horror movies or comedies and others prefer something else.

  • I'm not finding it bad, but I am pretty sure it is the first romance novel I've ever read that might be written by a man.  The author is K.A. Mitchell.  So far, one of the main characters is not very nice to other one, but that's pretty common, given the number of stolen Scottish lasses and such that have been stolen to neighboring what...lairddoms?  I think that's a word.  Lairddom.

  • I don't care much for romance novels as a whole. My mom loves Danielle Steel and Nora Roberts, so I have read a bunch of their stuff just because it was always lying around, and it doesn't interest me )the only NR books that interested me were the ones about witches or goddesses). I skip all the sex scenes because they're always the same.
  • hmmm ok.. also didnt know these existed.

I will admit- romance novels are my dirty little secret :) I enjoy them. I used to read wayyyy too many but I havent read one in maybe 4-5 months. I needed a break. I started reading them when I worked in news- I needed something with a guaranteed happy ending.

  • Hmmm, let me think of rules discussed. Well, I know there are issues with being bi or being gay and knowing yourself/letting people know which you are or pother lesbians will get pissed. There are rules about whether you like to wear a strap on because you wish you were a man/wish you were with a man or if the strap on thing is just another bedroom toy. There are rules about being in a group of lesbian friends and then dating within that group or friends. There are rules about the 'lesbian phone chain' in which it is ok to call people for favors because they are a lesbian like you. Hmmm... there are more....

And, of course, there are plenty of socially inflicted rules like how to be outed, how to navigate getting pregnant/married in places marriages are not legally recognized etc.etc.
  • Also, I am not one for romance novels, but one of my favorite re-read summer trash books is Scruples by Judith Krantz. Definitely pick that one up.
  • Wow.  That is a lot of rules, M&M.

  • Ha, and here I thought I was the only one reading the free Kindle romance novels!  Josh totally made fun of me for it until I pointed out a rather steamy sex scene.  He now supports me reading 'girlie porn' all I want :)

The gay stuff might throw me off a little bit.  I have nothing against it, but it's NMS.
  • That's a lot of rules. I'm going to have to make flash cards if I ever want to be a lesbian.

I have an acquaintance who loves loves loves Harry Potter so much so she belongs to a Harry Potter club and they write fan fiction, usually love stories, about the characters.  Yes, she is an adult and in her 30s.  The idea kinda creeps me out a bit since the characters are children.  I guess it is a rather harmless hobby since they seem to share them only within their group.

To me reading romance novels is like eating snack food or watching a sit-com.  Still satisfying in a guilty sort of way.

  • ROmance is romance. The homosexual ones are humorous to me, I guess because I can't really relate.

  • I've never read any romance novels, but I know of a LOT of slash fanfic. Which is similar. It's basically fanfic between two characters in a book/show/movie who would never actually be paired in that book/show/movie, since usually it's two people of the same gender.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I'm a huge romance novel fan.  I've been reading them since I was about 16 years old.  It's not something I hide at all - I actually think I might write one at some point.

Actually, the week before my BF and I started dating, a bunch of friends crashed at my place after a night out so they didn't have to drive, and we ended up having a 'slumber party' in my living room.  They were all teasing me about the romance novels on my bookshelf, so I pulled one down and started reading the steamy section out loud in a dramatic voice.  We all were dying laughing, and the boys were wide-eyed - they couldn't believe women read this type of smut!  So yeah, my BF definitely knew what he was getting himself into before we ever started dating!

I can't say I've ever read a romance novel that was strictly gay - I've had romance novels with multiple couples, and one was gay, but it wasn't the focus of the book.  It wouldn't bother me at all, but I'm not sure I'd purchase it at the bookstore.

Same here.  I go for non-fiction, science fiction, and the occasional mystery :)

  • I have to keep it light.  I dream mysteries.  After dreaming I was buried alive, I was done.

  • oh come one people, who doesn't like a hot sex scene? hmmmmmmmmm?
  • I love me some science fiction. Luckily my favorite Sci Fi writer also throws in hefty doses of romance as well :)
  • One of my guilty pleasures is J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series.  It started as paranormal romance (it's a modern vampire series), but after six or seven books flipped over to urban fantasy instead.  Almost all of the relationships are heterosexual, but I have to say, the subplot involving a gay vampire who falls in love with his bisexual best friend (also a vampire) is probably the hottest romance in the series -- and it isn't even a romance yet!  Just a whole lot of sexual tension.

  • I love romance novels.  <le sigh>  But I've never read a gay oriented one mainly because I just don't know if I could connect with the story as well.

  • I think I might have to start reading these books. Can you get them free without a Kindle?
  • I think so.  You can download a kindle app to your computer for sure, but I think lots of them are free through harlequin.  http://www.tryharlequin.com/

  • Any recommendations? I don't even know where to start!
  • Ha! I think my computer is trying to tell me something. I click "open file" and get the message "File is damaged", then opens my bbt chart.
