Snarky Brides

They changed the appearance of my venue!!! Am I overreacting?

Hi lovely ladies!

So, we are having our ceremony in our church (we are Catholic), and then we are having the reception and festivities at Disneyland afterwards.  I am throwing a tea party for my bridal party at Blue Bayou in Pirates of the Caribbean, I have the Kirstie Kelly Belle ball gown (gorgeous), and we have upgraded everything they suggested to make the reception of our dreams at DIsneyland.  Our venue is the Sleeping Beauty Pavilion, which is a gorgeous round ballroom that has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Disneyland property.  I loved the venue, and picked it because of the view over the other locations they showed us.  We are spending well over $20,000 on the reception at Disneyland.

There is construction going on at Disneyland, and we were assured that although a few building nearby our location were going to be renovated, nothing about our venue would be affected by the construction.

We recently went to the park, our venue was open, so we took a look around to get an idea of how we should do our lighting.  They had frosted all the windows!!!  The beautiful view that I loved was gone, and to be honest, the space felt smaller and almost claustrophobic to me.  They were also jackhammering outside, tearing up the beautiful mosaic balcony that we were looking forward to using for an outdoor area.  I hoped that perhaps the frosting was just a covering to protect the windows from the construction outside.

I emailed my planner at Disney, and she assured me the outdoor area would be complete by our wedding and could be used, but the windows would be frosted.  Apparently a lot of money had been freed up to expand construction, and the area around the pavilion would be under construction for our wedding.  She told me the photographers loved it because they could use flash in the room without glare, and the wall lights looked great.  She sent me pictures from a recent nighttime wedding, and I did not like it.  All the pictures they showed us during our site tour showed the lit palm trees and Captain Hook's ship through the windows that were now frosted :(  And when I say frosted, I mean you can't see anything out the window at all.  They are basically painted over for all practical purposes.

We are meeting with our planner at Disneyland on Tuesday, and I don't know what to do.  The wedding is in 3 months, and we have already sent out save the dates, I have my Disney princess dress, and everyone from out of state is so excited to come to Disneyland.  If we cancel, we lose our deposit now and owe half the projected budget. The thing I like most about our venue has been taken away, and I feel like I could have had our reception anywhere now because it would look the same.  I feel like they should compensate us somehow for making this change, and especially since our planner didn't bother to tell us, I had to mention it to her!  I am glad we live close by and saw the change before the wedding.  I just feel like we are spending a lot of money, we are paying for it, not my parents, and I want to love my space.

Am I overreacting?  What should I do?  I feel like I have been tricked :(

  • I think that you are within your rights to ask them to move you to another venue, since they changes key elements. They might not, however. Read your contract first.

  • I don't think you're overreacting to the change in itself, since you liked what it was before. But read your contract. If there's a clause in there that says that the contract still stands and they have the right to make changes to appearance, then you're kind of SOL.

It sucks, but if you can work with it, the frosted glass probably won't ruin your day.
  • I see why you're upset, and I probably would be too.  However, it really sounds as though there is nothing you can do.  The only thing I would suggest is seeing if there another space there that has the things you like and trying to talk them into allowing a switch.

  • I understand your sadness about expecting one thing and receiving another.  But in the end, I think you'll be happier if you stick to your original plan.  I think it will be more important to you when you look at the pictures to see your friends and family smiling and having a great time, and not the view out a window far in the background.  It's a big shock now, but I think you'll come to realize that it's not really a big deal in the end.

You're having a reception in Disneyland!  That's exciting!  You'll have an amazing time, even with the frosted windows.

  • I'm with AATB, I don't see the big deal. So they frosted the windows. I would be upset if there was a bunch of construction going on the entire time, or if you couldn't go outside because it was all torn up or equipment was in the way. If that was the case, I'd ask them to change it.

But windows? I'd get over it pretty quick. You're still having your wedding at Disney, nothing's stopping you from going outside whenever you want too.
The thing that bothered me most is that our planner didn't let us know, and she knew we picked the room for the view, and to avoid construction.  It is in our contract that they will work to have the renovation not affect our event in any way.  They have been so great about everything else, so this shocked me a little. It also makes me sad because my fiance was so excited about the venue, and had been planning the lighting design around the windows (he works in the entertainment industry).  He is more upset about this than I am.   I am sure in the end that my guests will not notice if they are frosted, but I really hope they will be willing to help us in some way since it is in our contract.
    Posted by bridgeeboo
You know, your planner probably works on tons of weddings there.  I bet she can't remember the specific reasons everyone picks the place.  With that said, however, if it's in your contract, and it's that important, I'd be asking what your options were or checking out different places to try to get it moved that better suit what you want.

If that's the ABSOLUTE ONLY place in all of Disney you're willing to have your reception, then you're just going to have to suck it up and deal with the frosted windows, even if it's not what you wanted (which I do think sucks), because I would bet my life savings and all my assets that they will not unfrost those windows for you.

  • Well, I'm sorry this is making you guys upset bridgee.  My venue is a huge gym so I guess I can't really imagine being upset over whether the windows were frosted or not.

Come to think of it, there actually are no windows at our venue.

And as you've noted you're shelling out quite a bit of money for this place - I know you're a little disappointed, but I don't doubt that it will still be gorgeous even with the frosted windows.

  • Thanks  for listening to me vent ladies :)  I know it will be great whatever happens, but I think other brides that have a view they paid extra for understand why I am a little upset (my fiance is actually quite mad) that my view is gone.  My maid of honor is getting married in Arizona next month with a ballroom with windows that has views of the mountains nearby, and she told me if they frosted her windows, she would be livid.

I just looked at my contract again, and there is a clause that says the renovation will have no effect on my event, so I think Disney will figure out a solution :)

See, I'm all for trying to figure out a compromise, but I want to warn you that technically, the renovation doesn't affect your event.  As long as your event still occurs, in it's promised place, and people can get in and out, it doesn't affect your event.

    So keep that in mind.

  • WTF is a Disney Princess dress?  Oh my.  I just don't get the Disney fanatics.

Besides that....I am all about places with a view that I love, and if my view became obstructed I would be really upset.  So I totally understand.

It is still such a beautiful room though, I am sure it will be a wonderful wedding. Don't let yourself get too down about and try and make sometime to take photos outside as well.

It's her own goddamned money.  Maybe she's a millionare, and her spending $20k on a venue is like you spending $200 on yours.  I'd also like to point out that people that DO spend lots of money on "friviolous" things are the people that keep this economy going, as bad as it is right now.  You know why the recession got to be so bad in the first place?  Because, the economy tanked, and people stopped spending money, and started saving it, which only made a bad situation worse.

The economy tanked because people stopped spending money that they didn't have to begin with and failed to pay back debts that were owed. Continuing to throw money into a billion dollor business (weddings) that blows things totally out of proportion and perspective isn't going to keep the economy going. Its the thinking that we *need* to spend that kind of money for a wedding/reception(as well as for other things) that got this country in trouble. I find it very sad that $10k is considered a "budget" wedding.  What a joke. That buys a good car, or helps with the down payment on a house, or pays student loans. Because of people trying to "keep up with the Jones'", it is nearly impossible to get anything for a wedding at a reasonable cost.
I really don't care how much money she makes, nor what she chooses to spend; but if you've got that kind of cash to blow then you really aren't in a position to whine about jack sh&*. I have no sympathy for the entitled princess in distress.
