Pitbulls?

Re: Pitbulls?

  • my impression of pit bulls isn't based off of rap videos etc. it's based off of the little boy i met who looked like a burn victim. his family's loving pit bull that they had since it was a puppy and had never shown aggression mauled him in his home. i knew the mom and she was a wonderful, caring mother who would never knowingly put her child in harm's way. i know it's an unpopular opinion here, but i do not like pit bulls at all and avoid them if at all possible.

the problem with the breed isn't the tendency for aggression. it's the amount of damage they cause when they DO bite.

but i still love blue. :)

  • Thats cause your hot and look like my news lady.

She looks great on tv though and just like you!

  • haha i know what you mean about reporters. we have this one reporter i think is so pretty and when i looked her up online she looked like a drag queen in her formal pics for the station.

    thank you. :)
  • as far as pitties

like the pp's said check insurance and what not....despite how great you might be at training I would spend the money to get the dog trained with you that helps the bond, and it shows that you did take the time.

A lot of people will not take the time to train their dogs - these dogs are SUPER loyal, love direction, love making you happy (they are sloppy kissers, and and knock things down with an excited wiggle butt) and most of all THEY NEED SOCIALIZATION.

This goes for any dog - get them out in public always work on basic commands and you will have a great great dog (this IMO is more important for the breeds that are deemed dangerous, like rotties,  pitties, dobies).

I get tons of compliments on my dog and it's because we set the bar of she will be trained and she will follow commands despite the situation.  It takes time but my sassy pants Laila knows at the dog park if i say come I mean it.  I can put her on a "doggie time out" where she will lay down on her side no matter how close a dog is and wait until I "release" her with the "All Done" command.  This we worked on in the event she gets overly excitable OR wants to have the last word persay since she has an Alpha side to her.

  • oh and in addition a lot of people LOVE the thick metal choke collars on pitties...it doesn't do much for them - gentle leaders work way better

due to their nature they will feel the pull and pull even harder against it - just makes them sound terrible and risks damage to their throat

Good point.  We have a husky mix, and the second he feels a pull on the leash, he just wants to pull harder (since, ya know, his breed is a sled dog and all...)

Thanks for the APBT clarifications, everyone :)
  • Jelenny, when I first got Katie she wasn't trained at all. The first thing we worked on was sit, stay. Well one day I was pissed and told her to stay (she had tried to eat the cat, literally) and went to check on Demon. I came back and started watching tv, forgetting that I put Katie in stay (I was learning too). Poor baby stayed for 2 hours until she started whining. She's good at stay lol.

The worst injury I've seen was actually caused by a dauchsund (sp?). This adorable little cutie pie dog actually bit a persons lip and then started shaking. The entire bottom lip was torn off, along with the skin along the chin area and a bit of the person's neck.
  • Thanks for all the advice and things to consider, ladies.  I haven't put in the adoption application yet- want to take my dog to visit Toby and see how they do before I move ahead.
You all gave me a lot to think about, so thanks. Laughing
