Who here has moved somewhere far?

Like out of state type of thing.  Did you move first, then get a job?  Or get a job first, then move?

I'm so curious as to how people do this.

I moved 1500 miles away from everyone and everything I knew when I was 22 (I am 35 now).  Everything I owned was in the back of my little Saturn coupe.

I had a 6 month internship lined up in Utah after I graduated from Indiana University.  They provided employee housing (it was the forest service).  I'm sure that made for an easier move when the housing is lined up for you.  It was only 6 months though.

On the first day in Utah, I met my now ex-husband, and together we moved to a different town (my current town) in Utah and I got a full time job after that internship.

That all took place 12 years ago!  In fact I am still working at that same job I got after the internship!

I moved from San Francisco to Denver with no job to be with my boyfriend (now my FI). I was a cocktail waitress there while I was looking.

Thankfully about 6 months later, my FI got a new job/promotion within the same company he was working for in San Francisco. They paid for our entire move. Movers came, packed everything up in boxes, put it all in a semi truck, and drove it to San Francisco. They would have moved our cars but we have a big dog so we had to drive him out here, the gas and hotel along the way was paid for though. Then we had a month of corporate housing before we had to find a new place.

He did have to pay taxes on the moving package though. I don't remember how much that was.

I moved out of the country. I finished college, didn't have anything to my name really nor a job lined up. I moved from NC to Ecuador to be with FI and got a job teaching English within a month.
  • I have never moved but my FI moved from South Carolina to Connecticut to be with me 2.5 years ago. He moved the week after he graduated college and he didn't have a job. He was actually offered a job in his hometown in SC, but turned it down to move up here with me. Luckily, he found an amazing job 1 month later and he's still there today. I think it's def. tough to move somewhere if you don't already have a job lined up, but if you're moving in with someone then it makes it easier.

  • Although I didn't move out of the province it was a 6 hour drive of a move.. does that count? I moved and then got a job.

  • I moved 4 hours away, obviously not out of state but I moved to be with my FI and for graduate school. So I moved then got a job about 2 weeks after graduate school started.

  • FI moved from Omaha, NE to Cincinnati, OH to be with me. He had a temporary job at PetsSmart (Which was his part-time job in addition to his full-time job in Omaha) - lined up via a transfer..so that provided some money in addition to my income.

Then he started searching for jobs - and found a great one as a bilingual IT guy..woot.

  • I moved 17 hours across the province. I ended up moving back but that move just might be in our future again.

I moved from MI to FL...I got an internship here (an unpaid one at that)...we had like $1500 saved up and that was it..We moved on a whim...We got jobs almost a month after we moved down.  They aren't our dreams jobs, but we'll get there eventually.  =)  I'm willing to move to almost anywhere. We have nothing holding us here in FL. I would like to be closer to family, but gotta do what ya gotta do.  We're young and want to see & experience different things!

OH& I never thought I would move to FL..I came here when I was a freshman in high school for a family vaca and said never...and here we are! haha...oh and moving away from my comfort zone was a HUGE deal and I mean HUGE...I like my bubble and change was hard...but with FI it was easy...we still have some hard times financially, but we're making it and loving it...making us stronger!

  • I moved from MI to WY for school when I was 18.  Moved back to MI when I was 19 because I was not ready to be away from my family at that time.  I spent about 8 months back at home and realized that there was really no future for teachers in Michigan, so i made the choice to move back out to Wyoming to finish school and give myself an advantage in life.

  • I moved from the Netherlands to Belgium for college. Only a three hour drive though :) I would love to move to another country again, but I guess we'll stay here.

  • I moved from DC to London back in July. I was lucky and was able to do an inter-company transfer (my company is based in DC but has offices around the world, including London). I moved to be with my FI who was already here for grad school, but it worked out professionally as well.

  • Loved all your stories... I wish I was more adventurous and could move on a whim.  I'd love to live in the Outer Banks for a while (North Carolina) or out in Tahoe (California).

  • well its not really "far" but i just moved in with my FI from jersey to PA...i rented my condo there, and me and him found a place together in PA....there was no way both of those two big things plus my finding a new job were all going to coincide together at the same time. i had to drive over two hours each way to get to my job in jersey....luckily i only did that for 3 weeks before i got a new job here that is 20 minutes away!!!
