Cheaper cake places? Want a simplish cake for 100 guests

I know I've read other girls who got their cakes for like $2-$3/slice but I can't find those posts anymore. Every quote I've gotten/seen seems to be near the $4-$5/slice mark.

My dream cake is pretty simple - 4 tiers, with white chocolate curls. No flowers, fruits, nothing else. Basically this, but without all the flowers:  http://www.cakeadelic.co.uk/wp-content/gallery/wedding/Three%20tier%20chocolate.JPG

Any suggestions? Cheaper is better, but delicious is required. :)

  • Dueto the intricate nature of the design, I highly doubt you will be able to find anyone to make your cake for 2-3/slice. I would say those prices are strictly for a plain buttercream cake.
Maybe someone else will have a suggestion, but I don't know of any.
  • Contact Tabitha Ballard w/ Cakes by Design.... I don't have her contact info but google it, or maybe someone who has her info will chime in.  Not sure if she can hit that price point, but her prices are good.

  • I would argee with that design of cake it's going to hard to find a lower price.

  • For 100 people I think you should go with a 3 layer cake and I agree if you want to keep the price down you should come up with an alternate design. Those choclate curls are time intensive for a baker. A simple buttercream design would be better.

You can try Ruth Robbins and if you mention The Knot board she'll give you a 10 percent discount. You'll have to do a simple design and cake flavor, but she does nice work. Mine is the 9th on the left from the top... with the love birds: http://www.tastefullyyourscakes.com/Photo-Gallery---Bride-s.html

Just email her for her price sheet.
  • Ruth or Tabitha are the cheapest I know of here.
  • (This is the OP, I forgot my password)

I think the chocolate curls are only time intensive if the baker has to make them him/herself. You could buy them pre-made, and just stick em on. Heck, just coat it in sticky icing and I'll buy them and stick them on myself! Lol

I guess I could do 3 tiers - but 4 tiers is closer to what I'm trying to create (Aggie Bonfire - actually has 5)

Thanks to those who gave suggestions - I will check them out.

Just got a quote from Tabitha - she had another idea (white chocolate-dipped pretzel sticks) and can do a 3 tier cake for 100 people for $250, or add an extra fake tier for $50. :) Haven't gotten a reply from Ruth yet.

Don't be so quick to shoot down ideas/budgets, guys, jeeze! The coupon/price-matching fiend in me is well aware that you can hit a lower budget if you look hard enough, and this one example only took one email. I also have a connection for dress alterations, she works out of her home and does hem/waist alterations for $50 for the whole dress if you can believe it. Budget brides represent!

Sorry. That's kind of rude. I don't know if you think we all had super-expensive blowout weddings, but a lot of us relied on help from other brides here trying to help us fit within our budget. That's totally exciting that you found a baker willing to work with your vision and find a creative way to fit within your budget. You don't have to 'scoreboard' us just because you found a good deal. We're excited to hear about a good deal, and hopefully you can help others in the future.
If you're more gracious with us trying to help, maybe we will be more willing in the future.
You probably don't realize that most of us had to 'budget represent' at some point in our planning. Whatever that means.
  • I certainly didn't mean to imply that your search for a budget wedding cake is unadmirable.  I only meant that you can't just blow off how intricate some cake designs are and act like "anyone could do it."  And to suggest such a thing (especially to a baker) is pretty insulting.
