help me decide

I don't have a picture, but I need a new winter coat, black or charcoal?I'm ridiculously indecisive when it comes to this sort of thing.

Re: help me decide

  • Black is more classic, but charcoal won't show every little stray hair, bit of dandruff, smudge, etc.

  • I prefer charcoal. I think it just has a softer look and is more versatile. It doesn't show dirt as much.
  • Charcoal for sure.  This makes me want a winter coat really bad.  Every year I see coats in stores and I think, "Who is buying these things?"  I never see people in coats here.

  • I prefer black, personally.

  • I love black coats, but I am going to say charcoal, because it could be worn with brown if need be. Black can't.
  • I like charcoal.

  • I love black coats, but I am going to say charcoal, because it could be worn with brown if need be. Black can't. This is my philosophy, too.  If you don't wear a lot of brown, go with a black coat, but if your winter wardrobe includes a decent amount of brown, I'd do charcoal, since it can go with either.  Also, ditto everyone who said charcoal is easier to maintain because it doesn't show every little speck like black does.
  • I love winter coats and really want a new one this year. I'm not sure two weeks in Seattle at Christmas is sufficient reason to get one. And I'd probably go with black. I have no practical reasons, I just like it better.

  • I'd wear a black coat with anything. I'm trying to figure out why charcoal would go any better with brown.

  • thank you Fallin, I couldn't figure that one out either, I just assumed I was not familiar with that charcoal/brown rule.

  • I wear black with anything, brown, even navy.

  • Especially in an overcoat.

  • I'll wear black with anything too.  My "winter coat" (actually a thin woll jacket with three quarter sleeves) is black and I wear it with brown and navy all the time.

  • I like black and brown together.
  • I went charcoal, but mainly because I am so fair skinned that I don't wear much of black ANYTHING or it makes me look like death. I have a navy blue peacoat I wear when I'm going brown.  I am really weird about mixing black(or charcoal) and brown.

  • I recognize my unwillingness to mix black and brown or navy as an odd personal quirk.  It just drives me nuts -- no real reason or justification for that, it's just a thing I have.
  • hmm, well I do have a camel colored coat and a green coat, so maybe I should go black.

  • If you have camel and green, go black.  I have black, camel, and I want a green one.
  • I find myself being coat obsessed lately, but I'm too cheap to buy anything.

  • I haven't looked yet, but Old Navy always has cute coats that are inexpensive.

  • I went charcoal, but mainly because I am so fair skinned that I don't wear much of black ANYTHING or it makes me look like death. This is why I go for charcoal also. Remember my creepy vampire picture?  Yeah, pale as can be. I will wear black, but it seems too overpowering in a winter coat for me.
  • the only thing I have in black are shoes.  I used to wear black pants but now I've slowly switched over to grey or some variation thereof.  I really look best in colors; maybe I'll look into getting a cute blue or green coat this year.

  • I was in Old Navy this weekend and was in coat heaven, but the prices are still higher than I'm willing to go for something I don't really need.  But if they were $30, I would have a very full closet.

  • This is why I went with a dark red / maroon colored coat.  Distinctive, goes with everything (black, brown, navy, etc).  I lub it.

  • I would love a red coat, this particular one only comes in charcoal, black and camel though.  maybe I should keep looking.
