Re: Kindle Klub

• Why you tryin' to make me feel bad about my Kindle, hoface?

image

• I'm sorry Dr. Lorne doesn't love you enough to wait for the pretty color touch screen.

• I'm pretty sure Dr. Pants hates me.

image

• It is pretty and the concept of "lending" is intriguing.  I won't, however, buy anything that relies on AT&T wireless.  It's the worse service--both signal and customer--I've ever had.
image
• Yeah. I am torn about it. On a book by book comparision price, B&N is pretty expensive compared to Amazon. But I do like the idea of being able to check it out in the stores. I do not like touch screens. Fingerprints eww. But I am all for more ereaders. The more competition the better.

• Good point, Fallin.I read that the Kindle will allow "simple" web browsing in the future? That's very appealing.

• I still can't picture myself enjoying reading a book electronically.  I sit at a computer all day every day and read/edit stuff so I feel like I would hate reading my me-time books on something like that.  Am I tripping?
• Shamwow, you're are trippin. I actually thought the same thing, and wrote a paper in college about how much I hated reading books online, but I love mine. Love love love. Love.

• the Kindle allows simple web browsing now. I have used it.Shamwow, you're tripping. I thought I would hate it too. I love it. I much prefer it to a paper book. I do miss book shopping though. And book covers.

• It's totally different from a computer screen.  It's hard to explain but it is.  I thought I'd miss the tactile experience of book reading but I really don't. I do miss walking into a bookstore, browsing, and walking out with a book, but the trade off is well worth it.

• Book covers.  Yeah.
image
• Hmmm. The website says "many" bestsellers and new releases are $9.99...the Google books feature is pretty neato. The COVERS! http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/index.asp

• Dit-toe.That does look pretty sweet but I worry about what the LCD screen would do to battery life. I love only charging my Kindle once every two months.

• I hate the Nook covers. But I do like the framey things like they have or the iphones. When I said I miss covers, I meant the cover art. Check out the price difference on the Sookie Stackhouse set from Amazon ($29.90) http://www.amazon.com/Sookie-Stackhouse-8-copy-Boxed-ebook/dp/B002QCJO0M/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&s=digital-text&qid=1256069450&sr=1-18  and from B&N ($51.13) http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Sookie-Stackhouse-8-volume-Set/Charlaine-Harris/e/9781101152171/?cds2Pid=23317&inframe=y

• Why do you hate the covers?I'm interested to see how the prices translate to the e-versions. Because yes, B&N is totally pricey.

• Oh sshit, nevermind. I clearly didn't look at the links, I thought you were talking about the print versions. DAMN.

• I like the pretty covers at the bottom. But I like PG's point about only charging it once in a blue moon more. The only downside of the infrequent charging is that I have absolutely no idea where my power cord is.

image

• The power cord is GENIUS. The plug in past hooks up with the ipod charging cord too.
image
• I will start by saying I was RIDICULOUSLY picky about my cover. I think I drove Fallin and PDX nuts while I was looking. All the Nook covers are impractical in my opinion. None of the covers have a decent closure to keep it from flopping open. One has an elastic band, but over time that will stretch, and one has snaps but it is a trifold cover so will add weight and bulk and just generally be nasty to hold. In terms of personal looks, I don't like that the method of securing the Nook is different on the top and bottom and I don't like that they have extra pockets inside, I don't need that.

• also, if that screen on the bottom is the only way to navigate your books it will be bad. I have 200+ books on my Kindle. I don't want to sound super negative though, I hope it is awesome. And frankly I can't wait to go to BN and play with it.

• No, no, this is all extremely helpful! So thank you, I wanted opinions on it from people who actually own an eReader.

• Hmmm, I really truly want to be convinced by you ladies because I know what book lovers you all are.  I guess I just can't get past the stigma in my own head.  It's hard to fathom that I wouldn't miss the feel and the smell of a paper book in my hands while I'm reading.  Yeah, I be trippin'Also, reading your kindle in a pool may be a bad idea.  Even if you have it inside a ziploc bag.  Just passing on that little nugget of wisdom. You're welcome
• I wonder if they will gouge less for newspaper feeds.  Amazon is taking 70% of the NYT fees, which I think is criminal.

• shamwow, there is a company that makes a waterproof covery like thing for the Kindle. the company makes all kinds of waterproof stuff for people that sail. Amazon lets you return it for 30 days, no questions. I'd try it out.

• haha I'll pass that tidbit of info on to my scholarly professor co-worker.  Though i suspect he's well aware of the waterproof cover's existence and just didn't want to shell out the cash monies for it.  Perhaps he's sufficiently learned his lesson now, it was a few weeks ago so I haven't remembered to ask whether it recovered from its swim or not
• I am going to get one, not just for water but also for sand.

• I was drooling over the nook last night.  I was all set to put my kindle on ebay and run out and get one...until my husband reminded me that I'd lose all my books.  shiit.  It's probably for the best anyway, I have a problem with impulse purchases.  I do love the lendme feature, and the fact that it uses a more standard format for books.  The wifi is nice also.  I'll definitely be stopping into a B&N to play with one.BTW, I'm currently kicking myself for not realizing that you could buy a box set of the sookie books.  I definitely bought each one seperately.  I'm awesome.

• Boxerfan, I am not sure that the lendme feature is going to be all that great. Reason being is the language around it says "many books" and "one time". We won't know for sure until it is out but I suspect that the publisher will get to decide whether or not the book can be "lent" and that most will say no. I also suspect you can only lend a particular book "one time". Still it is very slick looking and I am eager to play with it. I hope that I won't be sad I was an early adopter of the Kindle. I need to get 3 - 4 more years out of mine to make it worth the expense IMO (but I am cheap).

• oh...ya, I didn't see that part about "one time". That's pretty weak.  This thread has made me feel better about my kindle.  I was having some pretty adulterous thoughts.  Maybe I should buy it flowers or something.
