Re: Discuss

• Technically, a cell phone isn't even a "need."
• I have an iphone and I lub it very much.  It's probably one of my favorite material posessions.  But no, it is not a need.  It's definitely a luxury for us. That said, we did get it when we were in debt payoff mode.  That and our Christmas presents were our only splurges for almost a year, though.  And we weren't biitching about money on FB.

• It's like the people who show up to their bankruptcy hearing with a cell phone, cigarettes, and a frappuccino.  Fancy coffee drinks seem to be another one of those things that's considered a necessity and not an extra.

• People are dum.  I have family members who are in debt up to their eyeballs and facing being evicted from their home because they can't pay their bills, but she just went to Vegas not too long ago with some friends, they eat out constantly, and do a ton of other extracurricular type family outings that cost money, etc.  Now granted, they aren't posting about their money troubles on their FB, but neither of them have current jobs and it doesn't sound like they have any intention of getting jobs, they're just "riding it out". COMMON, seriouslyOh, and they both have iphones
• The iPhone pisses me off. At least it's down to $99 now, but zomg the bill is ridiculous. I really wanted one until I found out how much the unlimited data plan was. Eff that noise.

• I think the price of them is one thing, but the cost of the monthly bill to have internet access is the crazy part to me.  My cellphone bill is $36 a month I couldn't imagine paying anything much higher.
• When I worked at a personal injury firm, the clients were always biitching about being broke and "needin' my money." They all had cell phones.

• Fellow computer nerds are shocked and probably even a little judgy when they hear I can't get email or the internet on my phone.  Dude, I am near a computer 80% of the day, and the cheapest data plan is $50 more than my current plan.  I do not need the internets that much.

• It just bottles my mind.  I've known people who were struggling financially but still went out to the bars every weekend.  They think it's okay because it's the only thing that cheers them up, but it's also a big reason they can't afford to pay their bills which causes them to be depressed in the first place!  This same guy filed for bankruptcy over something like $3500.  Total idiot.

• Last year F told his son he was now responsible for his own cell phone bill, and the kid went out and spent the money he made during the summer on an iphone.  Within a few months, when the free texting and e-mailing ran out, he couldn't afford it and came to F to bail him out.  F made him sell it, and he now uses F's ancient cell phone, which I think has an antenna you have to pull out, it's that old.
• I love that story, Kay.  It warms my dark heart to think of a teenager talking on one of these:

• I do have to say that sometimes I think a cell IS a necessity.  You can't find a payphone around here anymore to save your life and it's just not safe/good idea to ask to use people's phones nowadays.  That being said, a pre-paid cell with $20 loaded for EMERGENCY calls is good enough.  Fancy schmancy plans, phones, bells and whistles, are for people who can afford them.
