pillows

How often do you get new pillows?

I was changing the sheets this afternoon and realized my pillow goes into the pillowcase WAY easier than it used to so I can only assume its getting worn down and lumpy. It is about 2 years old right now. Im thinking its time for new pillows, so im just curious how often everyone else buys new ones.

Re: pillows

  • I've had my current ones for a while now. Probably 4 years or so. Im just now noticing that they aren't the same anymore, and I dont like them. But I use 4 pillows at night, and we can afford to buy 6 $40 pillows right now. Boo. I say replace them if you can, and theyre starting to wear down.

  • I just got FI to throw out a pillow he's had since before college (over 10 years). It was disgusting, and smelled even through an allergy over and pillow case. I get new pillows every 3 years or so.

  • Unless you get them cleaned regularly, I dunno... How often do you change mattresses?  I usually buy nice pillows and they last quite a while, and clean the pillowcases of course and also the pillow cover - but they prolly get nasty inside, much faster than a mattress would.

Ew.  ...Kinda want to get some new pillows now!  I think it's been at least two or three years.  But I know you can take them to the dry cleaners to get cleaned, that way they last longer.

  • My pillows are really gross right now - we totally need new ones.  One of us drools so they are always discolored.  Nasty.

My husbands pillow is digusting, there are yellow stains all over it from him drooling through his pillow case. It is sort of making me skeeved out that his is dirty and mine is all thin and pitiful.

We have 4 pillows on the bed, the ones behind our pillow are more just for show I guess because we dont use them (I just like having it there), and they are in pristine condition.

What on earth do you do with 4 pillows all on your own sara??
  • I have 5 on my bed right now. I like to be propped up while I sleep, and for a while I had to be anyways. I usually only replace them if they look really grungy or are no longer comfortable.
  • I replace mine pretty frequently because I have a hell of a time getting comfortable.  Along with a bad back and whatnot I'd say at least once a year.

A bed set I bought like a year ago had 9 pillows, 9!  They are all in the closet...no clue what to do with 9 pillows, LOL

Another question - when you replace your pillows do you get the same kind every time or something different depending on what you find? I really like the pillows we got, we registered for them for our wedding, and I kind of want the exact same ones but im not sure if I will be able to find them and it makes me sad.
  • Yup, Beauty Rest firm.
  • We get different ones every time. BBB has lots and you can try them out on their set up beds.. not officially, but we do it.

I have to use allergy covers and change pillow cases often because I sweat in my sleep. SOmetimes it is really horrible. Last night I got up to use the restroom and I was dripping sweat like I was in Bikram yoga. Anyway, we change the sheets pretty often because of that as well.

  • I sleep with one between my knees when im on my side, because I my knee and foot on my right leg hurt like hell if I dont. I have 2 under my head, and one under an arm usually. :)

I sweat a lot in my sleep too, so I know what you mean. I get really hot at night, almost all of the time.
  • Me too. I go to sleep cold, trying to get warm, and then I wake up burning up. FI thinks its menopause. LOL

  • I sleep like Sara. H often ends up with no pillow at all.
I buy new pillows probably once a year, and I get whatever is on sale because that's how I roll.

  • We got new ones about a year ago, and then got a bunch as shower gifts that we ended up returning because we were comfrotable with the year-olds. I bought ours at Winners (Marshalls) for 16.99-  they are awesome down alternative.
  • I get new ones every 6-8 months.  But I buy cheap ones that are on sale.

FI tried to register for $80 pillows.  I vetoed that one real fast.

We registered for nice ones and those should last.

  • I think I'm going to turn in one of our picnic baskets from BBB and get some new pillows now.

Blue - 6-8 mos?  That seems like a lot of pillow turnover.

Only 5.  :)  We got 2 of the same from BBB, 2 homemade and 1 backpack one that we can't figure out where its from.  So we are stuck with 3 and are returning the ones that we registered for.

Hahaha well I could send you one!  I like the basket of one of them because they put our name on "Chadrea" and one of them is a wine backpack.

But note:  we have never been on a picnic.  I do think we are "picnic type people" which is why I registered for ONE picnic basket.

I feel like were picnic type people, but we have never been on one and Ive only actually had a picnic once in my life. I think the idea is just appealing.
  • Yeah we are backpacking people (awesome REI registry too) which is kind of like picnicing over and over again for a week.

  • I got a pillow from BB&B about 6 months ago and it is lumpy and uncomfortable already. It started out really soft so next time I'm going to try a firmer one. H's is still in great shape. I replace them either when they're gross, too lumpy to sleep on, or we need one for a certain condition (like H's, which is for people with neck problems).

I noticed ours were kind of stained a few weeks ago. Which is gross, because we always have pillowcases on them, so WTF? Anyway, we replaced them. We had had those pillows for about 2 years, which is a good amount of time, I think.

Edit: I'm making a picnic dinner tonight. We have 1 picnic basket and a cooler.

  • We replace them every year or so... but we get the cheap (like $5) ones from Target... I've tried the nicer ones and I don't like them, so cheap it is!

I've heard some gross statistics... like after 6 months, half the weight of your pillow is dust mite and dust mite poop or something.  Who knows if it's true, but Oprah said so.

I heard that about mattresses, but  dont know the numbers to go along with it. I think thats supremely gross that were sleeping on creatures and dead human cells all of our lives.
  • I feel a little better:
Ten percent of the weight of a two year old pillow can be composed of dead mites and their droppings.)
