For those that know about computers

I have a laptop I bought a year ago in October. I have a warranty on it however the receipt is in Kentucky at my parents house and I can't exactly have them mail it as I am not sure where it is at this point.

So, here is the problem: I have an ACER, and windows 7..The cd/dvd rom and the USB ports have not been working. Whenever I put something in, the drive appears then very fast and disappears. They worked at one point since I do have one cd copied onto the drive. I have done searches for the drive they claim to be installed properly and working, however they are not working. I have done any updates and searched updates.

I did everything I could think of doing. I do plug in the USB port of my phone charger that does work, however it isn't working for me to transfer anything from phone to computer or computer to phone. So, it knows it's there but it just doesn't come up in the "my computer" to open any files.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks INA

  • I wish I could help, but I'm far from a techie. I just wanted to say that (from personal experience) Acer is one of the absolute worst computers out there. The one I had blew up on me after just a few months. And even before that, it worked about as well as a sack of rocks.

I do hope you can get things fixed while it's still under warranty, but I'd definitely plan on looking for a new comp sometime in the future.

  • FI is a computer guy, so I had him read this. He said that your best bet would be to take it to a tech. He can't tell what is going on without actually playing around with your computer.

I, not being a computer person, would be as perplexed as you are. I would try reinstalling all the drivers.. and then I'd call a tech.

  • The only thing I can say for the USB is to check all available drives in "My Computer." Sometimes when I plug in a flash drive or any kind of memory device, it opens up in different files in My Computer. Like, sometimes it is "Travel Drive F" while other devices open in "Lexar E."

Other than that, I'm no help. Definitely talk to a tech guy, like the Geek Squad people.
  • thank you Seshat.

It comes up F or E but it like flashes very quickly and too fast to be able to click on it. I will definitely call into the warranty and see what I can do without the receipt and go from there. Thank you.

  • I asked H about this and he said it sounds like your motherboard or power supply are going out, but he can't be sure since he doesn't have the computer in front of him.
  • Could be any number of things. First, I'd check to see if your drivers and BIOS are up to date--you should be able to get the latest versions from Acer's website, I think.
  • If you are worried about accessing files in multiple locations check out www.dropbox.com. It's quite awesome, free (2 GB), can download onto all of your computers and access online. Anything you add to a dropbox from any location is automatically updated and can be accessed from anywhere!
