Re: Since Literature is dead...

  • She showered quickly and headed off to work trying to think about anything other than the night before.

    CHAPTER 3

It had been 3 excruciatingly long weeks since she'd spent the night in the arms of her handsome stranger.  She kept looking for him, but, with the exeption of the one red light encounter, he was nowhere to be found.

"Miss, Miss, howzabout some service?"  A nasal voice broke through her reverie.  Zoe reluctantly smoothed down her wrinkled apron and headed to the table full of old biddies.  Just what she needed, a table of needy customers who would keep her hopping for the next hour or so.

As she removed her apron, and collected her tips, her mind began to wander back to that amazing night.  Zoe's blonde head was down, concentrating on buttoning her jacket, and she didn't see the man walk in the door.

Brent. She couldn't believe she was staring into the eyes of the man she fell in love with years ago.  "We NEED some coffee over here"  the voice impatiently and loudly spat at her.  She rushed over to the pot and back to the customer and poured a cup all the while staring at Brent.  The cup overflowed over the table.  "Dammit!"  Zoe said under her breath.  She was quite distracted.  Distract was all Brent ever did to her.

Distract was all Brent ever did to her.

Truth be told, it was far from all he ever did to her.  That summer before her Junior year at William & Mary had been more educational than all her years of schooling combined.

<div>Zoe quickly pushed those thoughts out of her head.  It was one of those relationships that took nearly everything out of her and nearly made her swear off men when it ended.  Rather, when he ended it by getting too friendly with a rando at a bar.  Zoe just happened to walk in and witness it at the wrong time.  She still remembers that feeling of how her heart nearly shot out of her chest.  Sort of like what she was experiencing now, since the Captain from the other night walked in and took a seat directly across from Brent.  Schit.  They were friends.</div>

Zoe had two choices - cut and run like a scared rabbit, or straighten her back, hold her head up high, and strut over to that table like she owned the place. As much as she didn't want to, she chose option two.

"Sorry about the spill, Brent," she offered an apology as she arrived at the table with napkins. Steeling her nerves, she turned her eyes to the captain, who had settled into that satisfied smile when he saw just who his waitress was. "Who's your friend?"

Brent heard the nerves in her voice. He knew her well enough to know that sound, the way she tried to keep her hands still. Many a night he'd spent gleefully making her nervous, and many a night he still got pissed off thinking about how she walked into the bar and ruined what would have been one hell of a night with the dancer from out of town.

"Sebastian," he answered in that nasal voice. "Drop the doe-eyed look, sweets. You're not his type. My pal here has taste."

His words cut, but Zoe didn't let it show. She offered a menu instead. "What can I get you?"

Her captain, so Sebastian was his name, didn't even look at the menu. "How about another round of you?" he asked in that smooth, sexy voice. He may not have been wearing that Captain Jack Sparrow costume that first drew her to him - and his ship - but damn his voice still did sexy things to her.

Brent wasn't so amused. "You two know each other?"

"You could say that," Zoe answered, pleased by his discomfort. "Sebastian here took me on a ride...on his boat. Best ride of my life."

At her words, Brent rose and grabbed her arm. Sebastian rose as well, stepping in between the two. "We're gonna have words if you don't let her go," he warned, his voice taking on a sharp edge. When Brent relented, Sebastian turned to Zoe, offering her his arm. "I think we have some talking to do."
  • "I think we have some  talking to do"...

Zoe was reluctant but it was either go with Sebastion who seemed to be offering her an "out" or deal with Brent who looked as though he could kill the both of them.  She chose Sebastian.  "Hey Lorraine" Zoe called to her boss,  "I'm taking my fifteen minutes early."  Zoe didn't wait for a reply but followed Sebastian outside where he guided her to a bench and they both took a seat.

"You never called"  Zoe said, slightly more emotion was tied to it than she would have liked.  The smell of his soap, cologne or whatever it was must have been driving her mad. "You drove away from me that day like you had just seen me murder someone.  That didn't give the impression that you wanted to see me again.  I figured I would give you space"  Sebastian replied calmly.  "You have a kid!  What kind of father leaves his kid to go on sexual escapades?"  Zoe exclaimed.  Sebastian burst out laughing.  God did his laugh sound good.  His lips curled slightly to the side as he said "The kid, would be my boxer dog.  His full name is Billy the Kid."  Zoe didn't think her face could get any more flushed...
