Snarky Brides

Office White Elephant?

I work in a CPA firm with about 60 employees, and I've almost been here 2 years. There was a big team shakeup about a month ago when one of our partners retired, and our new team is having a get-together next week for Christmas to do a white elephant exchange.
Normally when I do white elephant I get something really funny and quirky, but this is a very professional firm. We all embrace our inner nerds and regularly make fun of ourselves and are lighthearted about it, but in general we're a very respected firm in our industry and I don't want to come off looking like a goober.

Anyways, WHAT do I bring to White Elephant that is funny, maybe nerdy, but still 100% professional? Limit is $20. I thought maybe a board game, since I love board games. You can look up well-rated, lesser known games that are fun and new to everyone.

I may be overthinking this whole thing...

Re: Office White Elephant?

  • Ugh I hate these things.  I know they're supposed to be fun, but I never enjoy them.

So basically, I'm no help lol.

[QUOTE]I hate White Elephants. Why spend money on something that isn't going to be enjoyed? We do one at work every year, I always buy chocolate, and now everyone always wants what I put into the grab bag because it is the only thing that doesn't suck. I like the wine idea. A silly or dirty label makes it funny, but wine is wine, so it is still useful.

I agree. We do a game like this with the adults in my family (it's a different game, same concept), and I always do food or coffee.

Maybe I'll hoof it over to World Market and find some cool wine or chocolates.
  • My first idea is to get something from ThinkGeek. Here is a link to their under $20 gift ideas.

  • Something food or alcohol related is usually universally liked. Perhaps a gift certificate to a local restaurant near your office? Or to a coffee place like Starbucks or Dunkin Doughnuts?

Uncommon Goods has some quirky stuff, though it may be hard to find something you want in the $20 range. But maybe there's some stuff on sale. Here's the office section of their site:

We like to have board game nights fairly often. Two of our favorites are Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan. Carcassonne falls within your price range and Settlers is a little more expensive, based on Amazon prices.

[QUOTE]Oooooh Cards Against Humanity is hilarious.  It's $25 on Amazon (so 5 over the limit) but it is a fricking awesome game.

<div>This game is awesome! We love that game too. Though you should be warned if you're unfamiliar with the game, that some, ok most, of the cards can be very inappropriate. But the game is a lot of fun. </div><div>
</div><div>ETA: Zombie Fluxx is another great card game - and a bit more PC if you need to worry about that. There's an original non-zombie version, but i've never played that one. </div>

Things is a great group game, in your price range at Target.

Edit: Maybe it isn't in the price range, I know at my Target it is, but the online price is different so I have no idea!
  • Scratch-off lottery tickets?  Maybe they sell appropriately themed ones.  Random, I did see someone give a lightsaber at one of these before.
