Totally lame WWYD- Should I buy this?!

i think I ask for too much fashion advice but I am fairly hopeless....

what do you guys think of this? I have a "law school" prom this spring and need a dress.

Its a little pricey so I don't know... I worry that the ruffles on the boobs will make my boobs look insane.....

  • You get to have a law school prom? Awesome!
I suck with fahsion, but I also wonder how the ruffles would look on boobs. It looks kind of short as well.
    image
  • I think it's very pretty, and would look gorgeous on you.
    imageFollow Me on Pinterest
  • Can you try it on first?

It's a really pretty dress and I would love to wear it too - but I hear ya on the ruffles.  They don't look exceptionally ruffly (ha, is that even a word!?) so maybe they wouldn't make your boobs look scary, but you just never know til you put it on.  With my boobs, I'd want to see it for myself.

I'm jealous of your law school prom, lol.  I was with my ex for his first two years of law school and he never wanted to go to the proms or anything else fun that they did.  Man was he boring.

  • Meh, not a fan. I don't know how you're built, but that dress would not be at all flattering on me. And if you are busty, then yeah, those ruffles will ensure no one looks at your face pretty much all night.

  • I say if you got 'em, flaunt 'em.

  • lol thanks guys. My boobs aren't insane but they are definitely present. I can't try this on so its a risk. Only dresses that are not skin tight work on me. I figure the loose ruffles on the hips my flatter me... we shall find out...

Ok, minus the boobs then, we're built about the same. Maybe it's just me, but dresses like that just make me look shorter and stumpier.

ETA: I think it's lack of a well defined waist that makes dresses like that not good on me.

  • I think it's really cute -- but I also can't help but remember the advice someone reposted in another thread (originally from Heidi Klum, I think?) about going short or going low, but not going short and low.

If I had your body, I'd wear that dress to skank around the town (because I have this idea that I'd be a shameless attention whore if I were thin and gorgeous and had that fantastic hair), but I'm not sure I'd wear it to a law school event, tbh.

  • Do what I do.  Order it - it doesn't fit?  Send it back :) You're out the shipping costs, but at least you know for sure.

  • It's pretty, if you can pull it off them go for it.
  • And yes, I am jealous.  :)

  • lc- you may actually be right...

celles- i didnt think about the short and boob factor. damn. i never wear anything that shows much skin. Only more recently have I ventured out.... sadly- at the law school events.... its skank-city. its awful.

  • Eh, I'm not crazy about it, but I have a hard time stepping out of my comfort box and trying new things. (Read: I'm a plain jane.) If it's kinda pricey and you can't try it on, I would look for something else.

  • Celles - whatever, I think you're gorgeous and that your hair is quite lovely!  Ps, I just stalked your updated bio and those earrings you picked out?  UM.  AMAZING.  Love the shoes too :) I can't wait for your wedding pictures.  Seriously.

  • I'm iffy on ruffles in general, but if you don't go with this one, still get something in that color, because I think it'll look amazing on you.

Ditto. I also am envious because if I lived somewhere where it was warm enough to get married outside in Feb/March, I would so do it.

That makes one of us!  I'm too stressed out about the 50 lbs. I can't possibly lose in three months without starving myself to death.  :3  I know it's stupid, but I keep thinking of all of those call outs about "fat brides," which makes me not want to get married... which reminds me of all the things I've deprived myself of over the years (beach vacations, pictures with family and friends, etc.) because I'm too self-concious about my body to get out of the house and interact with <em>real </em>people.

    Issues: I haz them.

But hey -- thanks for stroking my ego!  :)

And Starmusica, I changed my mind.  You are one of the prettiest person I have ever "seen" outside of a magazine or movie theater.  If you like the dress and feel gorgeous and confident in it -- and aren't worried that you'll be exposing too much (and from the sounds of it, you'll fit right in at a the law school bash!) -- then I think you should go for it.

</div><div>wow thank you so much. And I mean it- you look gorgeous in that siggy picture. </div><div>
</div><div>Law school is strange. At the last "prom"... one girl (who is a mom with a 5 year old daughter) wore a tiny short red dress and was dancing in ways I wouldn't dream of. I mostly hang out in the corner with my friend, husband and her bf and people watch... just all dressed up.</div>

  • Everyone's got insecurities - Lord knows I do.

The callouts to the "fat brides" were obviously from seriously stupid slore bags with no spines, at all.  And I truly believe they're jealous.  Sounds cliche - but seriously.  I think the only reason to be mean to someone about the way they look is because you're trying to divert negative attention away from yourself.  Plus, none of those assholes will be at your wedding.  You'll be surrounded by people you love and most importantly - your FI knows you're beautiful.  Consider your ego stroked... again.  (that sounds dirty)

You will be stunning and again - I can't wait to see the photos :)
    panther
  • wait it just clicked with me about the callouts. Those things are sh*t. I know we all have our own insecurities but please don't listen to the b*tches who posted there. You are going to be beautiful on your wedding day... and you will AW your photos for all of us (us old marry hoars need something to live off of now).

  • I know you didn't exactly ask for other recs, but I just bought this and it is really cute on:

It's from Nordstrom Rack, and they may not have it in whatever size you need, but you can check it out here:

There are a few other cute dresses at the Rack website, too.

  • I love the dress, and I don't think it's too much.  Sexy but not slutty.  Go for it!
  • I like it but I worry that it may be a little too teenager for a Law School event.  Just my opinion feel free to dismiss it.

  • lol it may be. I still havent jumped and bought it yet. Just to clarify this is an open bar dance more than a fancy event. I have a fancy event later in the year and I will be getting a full length gown for that (or borrowing one). Our last dance like this was at Fenway Park. We were lucky no one toppled down the stands in a drunken stupor. I don't drink a lot and only got buzzed so it was fun to watch :)
