Is this weird or is it just me??

In regards to the food/cake tasting.......we were really looking forward to doing this so I called the venue and they have one date in march and one date in MAY......both are on a Wednesday night at 6:30! There is NO way my FI and I Would be able to make it to Philly in time with traffic after we get done work, plus it would just be too stressful even trying to make it! I know for a fact that they we not booked every single Saturday and Sunday. I asked why we couldnt do it then and they said they only do a "open house" tasting one weekday night every two months!! So we cancelled the food tasting since I already know the food is excellent since I've been to it before for a wedding, but my FI was actually disappointed . I told her it's going to be almost impossible for us to leave work early on a weekday for the cake testing......so she said we could pick two different types of cake....and 4 fillings...and we could pick it up in a box and try it at home!! Wtf?? I guess in the grand scheme of things, it's not that big of a deal......but I feel really disappointed!!! I envisioned us going to the venue and having a private testing, plus I thought they had a hell of a lot more dates available to be accomadating to people!

Re: Is this weird or is it just me??

  • Ughhh stupid iPad!!! *******were not booked every single Saturday and Sunday******** Oh and they said for a "private tasting" it costs $400!!!! Is this normal???
  • That is crazy that they will only offer it a few nights a month.  The only night our venue does not do tasting is on Saturdays because that is the busy night.  Sorry to hear that you wont be able to do this!

I didnt realize you are that close to Philly.. Where in NJ do you live?  FI works in Moorestown and FIL live in Swedesboro

Wow. I'm so out of it tonight lol, just noticed YOU are actually from Philly;)
  • I live in Delaware County and I work near KOP

I visit Jersey normally once a week just so i dont have to pump gas hahah
  • Lol yes FI was laughing hysterically the first time I attempted to pump my gas for the very first time
  • I don't have a tasting at all :(. The venue is catered by a restaurant with a great reputation so they don't care aout letting you taste it.

The cake tasting is kinda weird to me though, that's not nearly the production that a food tasting would be.

I know:( the food is one thing since I know it's good already....but our cake?? I just feel like its part of the fun planning process and I'm not getting that!
  • That stinks!! That was one of the few things FI was excited for!!  But at least you get to taste the cake!!
  • That sounds odd that they charge for a tasting, but maybe its because I'm not from around there. Prices are usually a little better here and they don't usually charge for ridiculous stuff like that. As for not even trying to accommodate a taste testing (no matter where you're located) is pretty much telling the customer that they don't care about them or their experience with them as long as they get their money, at least to me.

  • At my venue, if we want to do a tasting it costs $200 per person and they request that you bring a minimum of 3 people....so crazy...

  • We're having our wedding in Philly too and our caterer charges $300 per person for a private tasting. They only have "open house" tastings about once a month, and they are always on Wednesdays. I wonder if we have the same caterer . . .

Fiance and I live in NY so we sent my mom to one of the tastings. She said the food was fantastic, but my fiance was really disappointed. The only things he cares about are food and music and he didn't even get to try the food!

They did let us try some cake at our catering meeting at which we set the menu, however. I'd see if they can bring some cake to that meeting when you have it (if you didn't already).

  • Wow that does sound weird to me!!  We got a tasting the day we booked to make sure we liked the food.  Then we have a tasting set up for May 20th we do not pay for anything and we will have both sets of parents with us.  I do know that a lot of places in NJ don't do tastings especially if they are well known.

  • I talked to one caterer that said they only do one tasting every few months and if I couldn't make it she would give FI a to go box of leftovers for me. Needless to say we didn't book with her.

Yea see?!! That's exactly how I thought it was going to be!
  • our tasting is exactly like Lady's. a private tasting with our meal options to finalize our exact menu with both sets of our parents.  Our chef and our catering sales manager and our day of coordinator will be there too.

I have heard of lots of places on the east coast operating the way yours does.  My future sister in law had a fancy caterer out in New Jersey and they just had to attend a big group tasting session, so she was surprised when I explained to her how our caterer did things.  it just sounds like things are done differently.

The cake tasting sounds odd, though.  Weird that they would just send some blobs of cake with you in a box...
  • Hi Shelby! I live 20 mins up route 422. How do you like the mall there? :) Conroy catering has a really good reputation. I wanted to have the wedding at The Please Touch Museum, and I believe they were the caters there too. I love my Venus in downtown Philly, but we literally have to take time off work because they only do food tastings on Wednesday afternoons. It stinks because we've never eaten there (heard it was excellent tho), and my FI is a 4th grade teacher. It's tough for him to get a day off in the school year. Our private tasting is free for us, but then $25 for each additional person.
