Re: Did anyone else feel this way???

  • I feel ya girl.  Take all the PP suggestions and you are going to be bee-you-tee-ful!  You'll find the perfect dress and feel like a gorgeous bride.  :)  But I do understand how you feel... my first experience was a DB which was nice to try dresses on in my size.  But the second experience = not as good :P

Just relax and have fun shopping!
  • I sooo feeel this way.  I totally get what you're coming from.  Please give us an update.  Good for you for bringing this up.  Kudos!  Good luck shopping!   I really hope you find something spectacular.

  • I have not read all responses but wanted to chime in with an experience I had at David's Bridal. I was shopping for a bridesmaids dress for a friends wedding. I'm on the smaller side and almost all the dresses I tried on made me look like a bag lady. All I remember is noticing how good all the curvier girls looked in their dresses and feeling jealous.
I wouldn't worry too much about going dress shopping. You look beautiful from the pic you have posted- If you receive bad customer service, just take your business elsewhere.

  • I was so nervous too!  I called a few places before hand to ask what size they carried to, and each response was different and really tailored if i went to them or not.

I see you are in Hudson Valley, there is a big salon in White Plains that I almost went to...i don't remember the name, but it seemed enormous.

I ultimately also went to David's Bridal, had a good experience, but just didn't like the dress so much and couldn't decide.  I wound up at RK Bridal in NYC that had easily 100 dresses in size 14 and up.

    Good luck!

(ps---i was so stressed i wound up in tears at Kleinfelds as they paraded strapless dress  after strapless dress in front of me)
(pss----wound up with a SHEER bolero trimmed with subtle rhinestones that matched my strapless dress!)
  • I'm way late, but I wanted to stress that you need to try on different styles, even if you have your ideal dress in mind. You'll be amazed at what looks good on your curves vs. a stick model. Keep an open mind, and go in with the mindset that this is fun and light and you won't die of dress cancer if you don't find the perfect one on your first round out. :)

My then-FSIL begged me to go with her, even though I had already decided exactly what I wanted and I was going to have my mom make it (she's a seamstress). FSIL took me to a dress shop and started pulling every style for me to try on. I ended up with the exact opposite of what I had in mind.
  • I normally lurk, but, when I went dress shopping is was the ONLY time in my life I wasn't worried about size. I didn't care what size they pulled and ordered, as long as it looked awesome. One place sent me into the stacks to pull dresses then abandoned me while helping someone else, we just left that one, I had my mom help me out of the dress, and left.

Bring some water with you, the dresses are in plastic bags and you might get shocked frequently.

Totally agree.  I never would have picked my dress in a million years.  It had everything I hated--it was strapless, big and princessy, and had pickups.  The girl helping me at the shop convinced me to try it on because it had just come in and she wanted to see it on someone and then I was in love.  I hear a lot of stories like mine and Bec's.

I didnt get nervous until right before my appt at DB.  I'm short and on the heavier side, which is why I only went to DB b/c I knew/hoped the appt would go smoother there.  I had selected several styes to try on, which I thought would be perfect at hiding my inperfetions.  Once the sales associates found out I was having a beach dress she went and brought me a dress that was a complete 180 from what I was thinking of.  She just simply asked for me to try it on b/c if she was getting married on the beach it would be what she'd wear.  Looking at it on the hanger I thought "no way!"  It had spaghetti straps and I'm not a fan of my arms!  But when I tried it on and saw myself in the mirror, I had the quinticential reactions...I cried.  It's the perfect dress for me on the beach.  It was only the 3rd dress I tried on...here I was thinking it would take me all day!  Marilyn Monroe was a size 14...I've lost 20Ibs since buying my dress and now I'm the same size as Marilyn Monroe.  I'd still like to lose some more before my wedding in 2 months, but thats to feed my insecurities.
I'm rambling, but my point is...you might think going dress shopping is going to be awkward b/c of sizing or never been much for wearing dresses, but you'd be shockingly surprised how nice a bridal gown looks on a woman w/ some natural curves!!!
    Best of luck dress shopping!!!!!!!

  • Didn't want to post this in Jamie's update thread and didn't want to start a new thread but I wanted to post that I went dress shopping today and it was so amazing! I picked 4 dresses that I wasn't even sure I loved but I was overwhelmed by the number of dresses.

A bridal consultant brought me into a room, asked me what I was looking for, looked me up and down and got me more dresses. I ended trying on all the dresses she brought and none that I picked. There were 2 that i LOVED and I was near tears because I never thought I could look like that. I am going to look at more dresses this weekend but I am in love with the last dress I tried on so I may have to go back and get that.
