Dog question

This is on my phone so I apologize in advance for spelling and grammar. Anyway, our pup has been a little... clingy lately. Then when we left today he was whining and crying. He hasn't done that since he was brand new, like 3 months. He's about 9 months now. is it normal for him to be going through a stage of separation anxiety? I'm not sure if we should be worried?

Re: Dog question

  • I know nothing about puppy development, but aw, that is sad. It must be so hard to leave the house!

  • I felt so bad today! its only worrisome because he's always been so independent.
  • Poor puppy! I hope you guys get it figured out. Maybe something scary happened last time he was home alone?

  • As long as he isn't showing any signs of a physical problem  (limping, cuts, etc) then he's probably just going through a stage. Give him a super special treat or toy every time you leave and he'll settle down a bit.
  • Try going out the door, and then coming back in. Do this a whole bunch, so he will realize that you are indeed coming back home. Then you leaving isn't such a big deal.

  • Is he crate trained? That can be a big help.

  • He was fixed at 8 weeks (before we got him.)  He's crate trained, and always has been.

I'm guessing/hoping it's just from last weekend when we had to leave him at the boarding place for 3 days during the wedding.  Actually, I think he's upset with us for not taking him back there. (It's a huge open, 12,000 sq ft place with a pool and like 40 dogs.)

We just need to get back in the habit of taking him to the dog park I think.
  • It's not separation anxiety, don't worry. Dogs with separation anxiety have a seriously problem and will actually physically hurt themselves to take their mind of the anxiety (like chew on their crate until they bent the bars and cut themselves kind of hurt) and they need medication. He's just old enough now to vocalize his displeasure for being left. My dog is doing the same thing from time to time, especially if we have to go out after work and we don't get to spent too much time with her, and she's 9 months too. He'll be ok and grow out of it, he's just a little one still, don't worry :)

I can commiserate. I may or may not refer to the puppy as "the baby". What?
