For those of you who live near your families, what do you do about holidays? Religious holidays aren't an issue with us because of us being of different religions, but I don't know what the right thing is to do for say, Father's day.

My mom planned something first, dinner at 6pm with my Father's side of the family at a restaurant. Today, FI's mother called wondering if we would do dinner with them. We told her we already had plans but we would stop by early afternoon to see them and she seemed upset. I feel like every holiday we are rushing from house to house trying to get everything in! What type of arrangements do you make?

Could you maybe invite them to dinner with you?

If not, you should alternate.  If you do fathers day this year with your family, then plan to do it with their family next year.

We usually host holidays here so we just invite everyone.

We alternate for the holidays that both of our families celebrate.  My family doesn't do a lot of big celebrations, so I spend a lot of holidays with his family, especially the religious ones.

My middle sister does the rush to everyone's house in one day.  

My older sister does a split on different days.  (Such as Father's day with dad on Saturday and the other dad on Sunday) 

My mom is over the moon that my ILs don't believe is celebrating holidays so she gets us for each unless H is working.  

The best way I've seen with my family was to do the different days if they are close enough.  People do not feel rushed or neglected.

We try to do alternate days.  We are staying with fiance's family tomorrow night and having dinner for Father's Day.  Sunday we will take my dad out to dinner.  We typically do something similar for every holiday but I don't know what we will do when we have kids because it kind of ruins holidays for us when we have to rush all over the state.  We wil probably alternate years or have family visit us at that point.

We alternate Father's Day and Mother's Day.

For the holidays, my sister hosts the family at her house for dinner,  but my FIL's do dinner too, so we alternate years...this year we will have dinner at FIL's and dessert at my sisters. My parents host the family party on Christmas Eve.  Christmas Day is at my FIL's. I host New Years Day Brunch at our house.  New Years Day is an open house, so I usually get both sides of the family...it's fun!  The kids play in the backyard and we adults nibble on the buffet and drink Bloody Mary's.

H's family usually does holiday meals earlier than my family, so we just go to their's first and then head to my mom's.  We're going over to his parent's tonight to to Father's day so we don't have to drive over there tomorrow.  Easter isn't a big deal because my family isn't religious, although this year it fell the day we celebrated our anniversary so we skipped family stuff.
