WR question..

Hello!

I have good suspicion my photographer looks on tk, so I may DD this. I didn't really want to post on E, because from my lurking I like all of you ladies a lot more.

First of all, my photographer is from Maine (I'm in RI, and is about a 4 hour drive from where the ceremony/reception is). When we booked her, it was a fee for x amount of hours, nothing else included. I recieved an email from her today asking if we could cover the hotel costs for her and her assistant (1 hotel room) because she doesn't want to drive home with her assistant if she is shooting after 8pm.

The hotel room would cost $109. She did state in the email if I was not able to cover it she would be able to, but it would be "GREATLY appreciated".

Would you pay for the hotel room?

Thank you so much!

Re: WR question..

  • I would but I probably would have assumed that I would have to from the beginning since she is going out of town to your wedding.

  • I agree with LHT. Just pay for the room, at least she's willing to share.

  • I would. I would not want someone driving that far after working all day. This may just be me but I'd be concerned that if she was upset my photos wouldn't be what I hoped for.

  • I'm kind of surprised this wasn't stipulated in her contract, TBH. My photog had a clause about traveling and what extra costs would be incurred, etc.

<div>Me too and it's weird that weeks or months later she asked for it.</div><div>

  • Eh I might be in the minority, but I'd almost say no.  It depends on if you've already signed your contract or not.  If this is all right around the time of discussing pricing/location/times/etc, I'd say still pay for it.  I find it really unprofessional of her to ask this if it's after you've signed a contract.  Our DJ is coming from 4 hours away, but he also told us upfront that he requires a hotel room to be provided for him (this was before we booked him).  The photographer should know at the time of booking if she needs the room or not, and all she's doing now is asking for you to pay another $100+ for her to be there because she didn't think of it then/didn't tell you about it then.
  • Oh, yes, I should have added that I would still pay it. Like Duds said, it's a small part of your overall budget and accommodating her will keep everyone happy and ready to work on the day of.
  • I agree, if you can swing it, I'd do it.  But I wouldn't bend over backwards for it if it's an afterthought
  • Maybe, even point out that she should add this to her contract for future jobs.

This may be something new to her and she's learning the ropes. My photog had a mileage charge he waved because he was a family friend, and he brought his wife and had a nice weekend, but I would have paid his mileage and hotel.

  • Chels, we signed our contract on June 28th of 2011.

I am really on the fence. I just looked over the contract again and there is no mention of a hotel room being paid for. The only stipulation she mentioned is if she is shooting for 6 or more hours then a meal must be provided, which I am ok with.

I will probably end up paying it, but I really find it unprofessional she would ask almost a year after signing the contract about this, and the wedding is now in 4 months.

Yeah that long ago, I find it really unprofessional.
What if you split it? Let her know you find it really unprofessional, but let her know you'll pay for half of her room as a sign of good faith because you want her there and trust her with your wedding photos.  Regardless of what you decide, be straight with her how you feel.  How she reacts will speak MILES of how professional she is.
  • kd- I think you are right, and she may be just learning the ropes. She has been doing this for about 2 years now I think. Mentioning she might want to include this in other contracts may be helpful for her also.

  • If I booked a vendor from 3 states away I would assume Im covering a hotel.

Also- a meal should be provided even if its less than 6 hours.

  • Thanks everyone for answering! I am going to email her and say she should probably put this in her contract for future clients, but I will provide a room for them.

HOLY CRAP BLUE YOUR NUMBERS!!!!!! :)
  • Blue- Point taken. Also, not related but congratulations! I was rooting for you.

I'm sure we will have a meal provided for her and her assistant because I do not like the idea of her not eating from 4 until probably 10pm.
