Near Death Experiences?

LesPaul's ridiculous story about the .45 made me gasp! Any one else have a near death experience?

Re: Near Death Experiences?

  • When I was about 13 some friends and I were at one of their houses, friend gets out a gun that was in the house (you know where this is going), it's a semi auto so for those of you not familiar with guns, that's the non-revolver type where the bullets are kept in a clip in the grip area of the gun, but there can also be a bullet in the chamber regardless of whether the clip is in or not.  Well, friend was not taught how to handle guns, removes the clip and assumes it's not loaded, next thing you know a bullet misses my head by about 2 inches, I felt it go by my ear into the wall behind me.

I'm pro-gun but have never owned one and not sure if I ever will, but I'm a strong believer that weapons should not be in any house where someone lives who has not been trained how to handle weapons or where they are not locked up 24x7 in a way that is only accessible to the proper people.  In my friends case, the gun was in a gun safe that he knew the combo to, i.e. whats the point of even having the safe.

  • I did this to my car once:

Believe it or not, I walked away.

  • I almost drowned when I was 6 or 7. I was the flower girl in my aunt's wedding and we were at the her in-laws house for the rehersal dinner. They had a huge pool and I was swimming with another girl who was probably about 4. She wanted me to swim with her down to the deep end, so I told her to make sure to hang on to the side of the pool. She didn't and we went under. I kind of remember being about to black out when someone jumped in and pulled us both out.
hmmm never really had one.. thank god. what thread was lespaul's story?!?!!
    Posted by Starmusica
I mentioned it in the 'Poll' thread.  I was in traffic with a friend, and she flipped some guy off who was following too close.  He pulled up next to us (on my side of the car), rolled down the window, and pointed a .45 at me.  He tried to get away, but the traffic was pretty heavy so we got his license info and went to the police station to report it.  And, since he had a military id sticker on the car, we went to the MPs too.  He got pulled over on post later that day, and spent the weekend in jail.  But the charges were dropped, and nothing else happened to him.  That was the last time I considered flipping off or gesturing at another driver.

  • Sarah - some kid did THIS to my car, and HE lived!

He stole it from a body shop and went on a joy ride.  I've posted the pic before but yeah... it's amazing to me what people can live through.

  • 1. Not anything I can remember, but I almost died as a newborn. Recurrent respitory papillomatosis, I was born with it, it causes growths on my vocal folds, which blocks off my airway if they're let to grow. Ofc, they didn't know this right after I was born and the hospital I was in had no idea wtf was wrong with me. They had to fly me to Sick Kids in Toronto, where they diagnosed me in about 5 seconds and got me into surgery.

    2. I was biking up a hill when I was about 11, I live on a backroad which is all twists and turns and hills, makes it very hard to see more than 10 feet in front of  you. I was kind of in the middle of the road, and thought "I should probably move over". Right after I did, this truck comes screaming over the hill and missed me by about 5 inches.
  • In truth, no. But at the time, I felt like it was - when I crashed the ATV in Moab and pulled it over on top of me. I was VERY grateful for a helmet.

Vegas, did you see the clip of the LeMans pit accident?

  • I was in a serious car accident 6 years ago. I had a 90 year old man come out of no where, I swerved, he T-boned us, and it made the car roll. It broke my seat belt and my face broke the windshield, I broke my hip, had glass in my eyes, and I went into shock. It was harsh to say the least.

When you go through something like that, you are forced to reconnect your memories (sometimes too many times), and so now I feel like I can see the whole thing like a movie in slow-mo and I remember very well thinking, "this is it.". I unfortunately remember every little thing.

I have some signs of PTSD from it actually, has anyone ever seen Six Feet Under? The episodes following David's attack made me finally realize it wasn't normal to have a panic attack every time I saw a white truck and I needed help. (In the show, David has a panic attack when he sees anyone in a red hoodie).

After reading about your accident I no longer feel okay about whining about getting rear ended recently.  Obviously, it pales in comparison.
In Response to Re: Near Death Experiences? : All car accidents are worth whining about, plus if you ever need to bitch about dealing with another person's car insurance, believe me, I can relate. BTW, I forgot the cherry to my story: the old man blamed us for the accident so I was treated like sh*t by the cops and had to fight his sh*t in court. I won of course, but being blamed for it while I was in shock? Worst experience ever.

    What an old skeever asshole.

There's this lady from my hometown who is 93 years old and she was driving on the wrong side of a highway this spring and HIT two motorcycles, killing one person (a pregnant woman) and seriously wounding two others.  She was only fined twenty bucks and later contested the ticket!

Her license was then revoked and she was found driving again.  Law enforcement went to her property and found ten cars and removed the license plates from each of them.  But she refuses to stop driving.

She is clearly a menace to society and apparently still refuses to take any blame for the accident that killed a woman THAT SHE CAUSED.

So yeah.  The old curmudgeon man in your story reminded me of that.  Sheesh

  • Old drivers honestly don't bother me as much as their kids that let them drive. I know they can be stubborn, but for FFS get them off the road!

In Oregon if you are over 80 and get in a wreck you have to re-take the driver's test. The old man who hit me failed because, turns out, he's legally blind! I tell people I got hit by a blind man and love to see the double-take.

Nope, did not get to watch it this year, the DVR filled up while I was gone. :-(

Formula 1 about six weeks ago had an insane wreck though, one of the red bull cars did a somersault; driver was fine fortunately.
I've had a gun put to my head. Part of me knew he was just trying to scare me into silence, but another part wasn't so sure.
    Posted by Seshat411
Same here. Right after he punched a hole in the wall right next to my head. Being that he carried that gun with him everywhere, it was definitely an unsure moment as to whether he'd actually pull the trigger or not.

  • I was also in a car accident, where everything was bent up (the other guy t-boned my poor corolla) except for the license plate!  I was carried in an ambulance for which I don't remember, and woke up in the hospital MRI tube... Luckily I'm not claustrophobic.  I walked away with no broken bones, but severe whiplash...

That was three years ago, and I don't remember what happened, but I know that a nurse stopped by, and told me to get out of the driver's seat because she thought the other car was going to explode...or catch on fire...

All I know is that the other car was going 60 mph in a 40 zone, and it was speeding up to mock another car in the slow lane... he didn't even see the stop sign, much less me!

  • I have a few from being sick as a kid...it got close!

Last year I was driving to work going pretty slow since the roads were really icey.  I leave at 6 am so there weren't many people in front of me and no one behind me.  A guy went to turn left in front of us, couldn't stop, slammed into the car in front of me which hit the car in front of him while he fishtailed backwards towards me.  I could NOT stop since the ice was so bad and if I hadn't known HOW to drive on an icy road, he would have hit me head on.

  • I was hit by a car while riding my bike when I was 11.  I wouldn't call it a 'close call' because luckily the guy was able to stop enough to where he barely just knocked me off my bike.  I broke my wrist from bracing the fall, but that was it.  However, I was not wearing a helmet and I know it could have been much worse.  I was also lucky that the driver actually stayed.  In that neighborhood, there are a lot of illegal immigrants who don't have insurance, so a lot of times, when they get in an accident, they bolt.

Oh my gosh Sarah. That is unbelievably sad and tragic. :( I am so glad you weren't with them when that happened though. It wasn't your fault they chose to go again.
