Cew! Or any other HR/hiring people (long)

I have no idea if you're around now or not, but I DO know you give great advice on job related questions and I could use some right now :)

I've mentioned before that H applied for a job in Chapel Hill.  There's been a hold up in the hiring process.  They e-mailed H almost 2 months ago explaining this and said that he is "one of several strong candidates" and they hoped to be able to proceed with the hiring process soon. He hasn't heard anything from them since. He REALLY wants this job.

He has another interview for a job in the Charlotte area on April 25th and I'm almost positive that he will get it since he has worked with the other audiologist there before (she used to live in DC and was his supervisor for his externship) and she loves him.  While he knows he would love the people there and it would be a good experience, we're not completely sold on living in Charlotte.

If he gets an offer from Charlotte and hasn't heard back from CH yet, would it be appropriate to contact CH and say that he has another offer on the table but they are still his first choice, and inquire about when they will proceed with hiring/where he stands for getting the job with them?  If so, how should he word this?

To make matters a tad more awkward, the audiologist from the job in Charlotte was one of his references for the job in CH, which he applied for before the Charlotte job became available.  So she knows that he has applied there and that he's really excited about it.

To make the world even smaller, a girl who was in grad school with H but one year behind him is currently doing her externship at the place in CH.  Her partner is interning at my agency here in DC now.  The intern told me that the reason there is a temporary hiring hold is because the guy who resigned from the position had the deal on his house fall through and couldn't sell it.  So he asked to come back temporary until he can get his house sold.

  • Hi! My FIL is an audiologist too!

Okay, so my advice is to definitely call the CH office. It's awesome that you guys have so many contacts and can get the scoop, so I feel like you have an advantage that most people don't have. And it sounds like a genuine reason to put a hold on the job as opposed to someone just giving him the run around.

I would call them and let them know that I was still very interested in the position, but that I had just received another offer (if he hasn't received the offer yet, he can say that he is interviewing for a job in Charlotte) and that I just want to check on the status of my candidacy before making any decisions as this job is my first choice. If they really want him, they may make room for him. If they are just kind of meh about him or don't have any way to get him in, then they will probably just tell him that they are not ready to begin recruiting again.

At that point, he can either proceed with Charlotte or wait until they begin the process again (not sure that I would advise of this since he is one of many and may not end up getting the job).

Either way, best of luck to him! That's really exciting. Is there any reason that you aren't excited about Charlotte?
  • Thanks Cew! That's definitely helpful.  He said he wants to wait until after the interview in Charlotte, then he will go ahead and contact them like you suggested and let them know he has another potential job and wants to check on his candidacy status.

The main reason that we prefer Chapel Hill is because the Raleigh/Durham/CH area has more job opportunities for me since I also have professional contacts in that area that could help me find a job (mental health field, but I also want to keep working specifically with deaf/hard of hearing individuals so I have more limited opportunities to begin with).  And also, it's closer to my parents who just moved to Clayton a few weeks ago.  Plus like I said before the job in CH is just perfect for H - and it has great benefits/salary.

But, we are open to considering Charlotte still.  We already know some people there, which would be nice. So we'll see what happens!  H also just today filled out an application online for a military job in Raleigh as an audiologist for soldiers, but he's not quite as excited about that one.

    You're awesome. Many thanks!!
