Have you heard...

Have you heard the phrase, "with bells on?"

Re: Have you heard...

  • Yes, but only in regards to attending something. As in, "Are you going to x thing?" and the other person says "I'll be there with bells on."

  • Yes!
Mainly to do with weddings but also events in general.
  • It's a pretty common saying in this region.  I don't think i heard it with any frequency elsewhere.
  • Same as LC. Though I suppose there is some original meaning that I don't know about, and it's probably dark and harkens back to Medieval times. That usually seems to be the case. Why do you ask, Kim?

  • So you're saying Scott AND my MOH are both freaks?  I realize it's outdated but I really didn't think it was that obscure...

Scott asked if it was wedding specific.  I always just thought it was event specific like LC said.
  • I've heard it!

It's event specific but not necessarily a fancy or formal event.  It's a common response I hear when people are asked if they'll be at the H.S. football game.  I feel it means "i'll be there and at the ready to fully participate."

Yeah. Whenever I hear it, it always means to me "Hell yeah I'm going! And I'm really effin excited about it!" Unless that person is using his/her sarcasm font, in which case it means to me "I'd rather eat shiit and die than go, but I have to."

  • Yeah, I explained it to Scott and he still looked at me like I had snakes coming out of my nose.

Celles - Are you an Arizona native or no?  Scott and my MOH are, but I'm not, so that could be part of it.  But I'm also fairly sure I haven't heard from my family but just in general.
  • I have heard the word.  What word? Oh well-a bird bird bird, bird is the word... :)  <-totatally my first thoughts when seeing the post title.  I probably watch too much Family Guy. LOL

I hear it hear in Pittsburgh and I heard it when I lived in Michigan. Here's why people say it.

"Be there with bells on. Arriving 'with bells on' -- meaning happy and delighted to attend -- goes back to the days before automobile, when it was the custom to deck out with the fanciest harness the horse that drew the carriage for special occasions. That, of course, was the harness 'with bells on.'" From the "Morris Dictionary of Word Phrase Origins" by William and Mary Morris (HarperCollins, Publishers, New York, 1977, 1988).

And my favorite RSVP card that I plan on copying, you have to click on the picture to read it.

  • Yes I'm familiar with the term and have heard it used a number of times.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

Now I have "bird, bird, bird, bird is the word - have you heard, about the bird" in my head.  My first MIL used to sing this, and it reminds me of her.

Yes, to say 'with bells on' means to respond with enthusiasm and be ready to party.

That's actually how it came up!  I was working on our invited suite and I made an RSVP card with this one it, showed it to him and he was like "WTF?"  We decided not to go with it incase the immigrants in his family had the same reaction.
