google yourself. do it!

It's late night for you girls, but you can always participate in this poll when you wake up.

I just googled myself (looking for a journal article I wrote that should be coming out soon) and I found Nick and I on this random website (I gather it's associated with the magazine we were in, but I'm not 100% sure because it's a different article)...

clicky

What do you find when you search for your name on google? Anything surprising?

Re: google yourself. do it!

  • The only thing that came up for me was my Myspace page that I haven't updated in about 2 years.

I suppose that's a good thing. Flying under the radar. Woot!

You get a lot of stuff that isn't me.

I have a common first name and a household word for my last name.

ETA: From the first 10 pages of results, only one hit is actually me and that's my Twitter.
  • Hmmm.  I haven't done this using my married name.  Apparently there is an author with the same name, and most of the hits are her.  And a designer of the same name too.  If I include my maiden (middle) name I get my FB page, and the FB pages of some of my friends.

  • My first name is commonly mispelled and mistaken for something else, so google asked me if I meant to spell it that way. LOL not much out there for me, some college info and that's about it.
    Anniversary
  • I find stuff about work on myself but more interesting I noticed my bio now is a top suggested hit return when you search certain key words pertaining to Martha's Vineyard Weddings on Bing and Yahoo. I wonder who out there made that decision! Flattering though :)
  • stuff about a college. my first name is a day of the week and my last name is a name of a college.

  • A few things pop up for me.

My full name pulls up a high school alumni list, and my first and last pull up Rate My Teacher (of course) and a honeymoon registry that we didn't make.  So either Nathan made one or one of our parents did (weird) or some store sold our info.

There's also some kind of opera that uses my first name for the girl character and my last for the guy!
  • Nothing good. My name is apparently more common than I thought. If you google my maiden name, it's definitely all me: myspace, linkedin, facebook. Boring.

  • My maiden name pops up some hilarious newspaper articles about stuff that happened in highschool. Wow! Who knew this stuff was archived so far back...
  • My maiden name is very uncommon but it still pops up people who aren't me, like a beauty pageant contestant in Rhode Island HAHA. Then it comes up with our weddingchannel.com profile -- which is blank except for 2 registries -- and some articles I wrote or was quoted in from our high school and college newspapers.

My married name is much more common and I don't show up on the first two pages of google results at all. :)

  • My married last name is suuuuuuper common, so the things that are actually me and slim to none.

  • With my married name, our wedding video comes up, an article from the NY Daily News about our wedding and a couple mentions of me for a work conference.
  • Googling myself doesnt work, there is oddly a 40 year old woman with my name about half an hour away and SHE comes up, but I dont at all. All I get from google is "did you mean Samantha (last name spelled wrong)" because they dont believe my name is real.

I think you should show up to her house and accuse her of identity theft.
  • Stuff about some German competitions I was in in high school, some of my swimming stuff from high school, a letter to the editor in my local paper that I wrote in high school, my graduation info from college, and a bunch of stuff that's not actually me.  Kind of fun!

I should accuse her of really bad taste in books. Her amazon list sucks.

  • I get nothing if I google my married name. My maiden pulls up some religious petitions I signed while in high school, theatre productions I was in, and the state poetry competition I won. Apparently I stopped doing things after 18 lol.

Or you just learned to cover your tracks better ;)
  • I tried my married name and got zilch.  Apparently when I said "I do" I ceased to exist on the Internet.  I'm mostly OK with that.

    You and your logic...
  • I get links to my photography, clubs/organizations I was a part of in university, theatre bios and reviews, and links to my facebook profile in about a million languages (which makes me glad I have my info set to private!).

And then, oddly enough, I also get links to some Star Wars role playing board where someone decided to use my full name for a character they were writing about. I have no idea who it is, but it must be someone who has met me at some point before, because I have yet to find anyone else with my exact name on the internet; if it's a coincidence and the person thought they were making a name up, then that's just damn spooky!

Oh great- so I just did this exercise again and now this thread comes up because the OP contained a link which had my full name in it! I've edited that so let's hope it disappears from google's memory!
  • I have 3 or 4 pages about my books, and some links leading to artwork for the annual streetpainting festival I do.
  • Books that you've written, Seshat?
