Need recipes/ideas

So we're going up to a cabin for a week and I'm trying to think of fun snacks and such that i can make in advance.  I've got a fridge and stove so I'll be cooking most days like normal but I'd love some ideas of items I can make at home and just bring with me  that maybe don't need a fridge at all since I suspect that will be pretty full of all the food for actual meals.

So far I have:

*smores on a stick (since bonfires are banned) - pinterest/paula deen
*oatmeal butterscotch cookies
*some kind of cheese cracker  - looking on Pinterest (celtic's cheese straws)
*applesauce muffins (added)
*PB &J bars (added)

But that's all I've got.  Anyone have a magical recipe they've found lately?

EDIT To clarify:

We're bringing actual food so I just need snacks that can sit on a counter for nibbling
We're bring trail food for hiking but would like variety when at the cabin
Looking for items that don't need a fridge at all

Re: Need recipes/ideas

  • That's my problem Dot.  Almost everything I think of needs refrigeration.  Luckily we have one for food in general.

    Maybe muffins would be okay.
  • Spiced roasted nuts, I use this recipe

My sister makes these pastry twist thingies with cayenne and cheese that are yummy. Similar to this recipe.

Super easy to make salsa if you have a blnder - click. Most of the ingrediants don't have to be refrigerated before you make it but the finished product will.

I made an amazing app the other day that was just roast tomatoes with fontina and garlic, scooped up with bread (click). This recipe doesn't meet your criteria at all but it was insanely good.

[QUOTE]We took an ice chest also so I kept fruit and veggies in there. But we had easy access to ice. Could you do that?

</div><div>Totally could, but it just seems easier to come up with anti-fridge foods.</div><div>

  • What about things like:

    Beef jerky
    Trail Mix/Chex Mix
Fruit (bananas or apples with peanut butter)
    Bagels
    Pita bread w/ tuna (canned)

  • I'm doing some google searches to see if I can come up with anything else.  We plan to camp this fall so I'll probably use some of these.

[QUOTE]Does the cabin have a microwave? If so, I'd take a few packs of microwave popcorn.  You can take along cinnamon or season salt to make different flavors for snacks.

<div>That is a pretty fabulous idea.  I didn't even think about the microwave</div>

Sounds like you need to define your request a little, since you've shot down the majority of suggestions on here.

<div>Thanks for the lnk!   Have you tried any of the recipes that you can recommend?</div>
  • I've made a very similar PB Fudge thats on page 1 and it was good.

I've also made:  PB, Honey and granola wraps (I used to get them at tropical smoothie so I made them at home to save money), and I've made trail mix before (very similar to the one listed).  Otherwise, I just googled the link.  A lot of them look good.

  • Here is a recipe my best friend made up. They are really tasty and can be made with a lot of different flavors.

     Jumbles
    2 cups flour
    2 cups quick oats
    11/2 cups brown sugar
    1 tsp baking soda
    1/2 tsp salt

    21/4 sticks melted butter

Jar of preserves or a bag of chocolate chips and squeeze ice cream caramel sauce.

    9x13 inch pan. 350

Put half of the crumble mixture into bottom of pan. Press. Cook till brown on edges 10-15 minutes

Add fruit or chocolate and caramel. Put chips first then squeeze a good amount of caramel on top-add pecans if u want. They r really good with the white chocolate ones.

Then put the other half of the crumble mixture on top and press down.

Cook till it's not super jiggly in the middle when u shake it. And brown on the edges.
25-35 minutes-the chocolate ones take longer than the fruit.

  • Thanks Lili!

I'll be making those tomorrow.  Caramel sauce = automatic win in my book.
  • For sweets you can take ritz crackers and sandwich them with pb and then dip them in chocolate. They are easy, can sit on the counter, and pretty tasty. Brownies are always a hit, especially when I randomly place Rolo candies in them as they are baking and you get little surprise caramel bites in the brownies.
