Snarky Brides

It has almost been 6 months..

..since we've been married and I am JUST now getting around to changing my student loans, passport and FOID cards to my new name.

My advice to soon-to-be brides, change it all as soon as you get your certificates.  (and order a few extras!!!)

Re: It has almost been 6 months..

  • I still have a credit card under my old name. I called them daily for the first month and never left the holding music and gave up.

Definitely get extras :) I got 5 and I think I have 3 left. Luckily all of my credit cards, student loans, etc needed a driver's license or gave them back.

  • I loved that Sallie Mae allowed me to send a COPY.  Those bad boys cost me money!

  • Mine weren't bad. I think it was $2.50 per certificate. Still though, now we live 1.5 hours away from the courthouse so it would be a major hassle.

I'm still amazed at all of the little shiit that keeps appearing. You don't realize how many things are connected to your name until you change it.
  • You have to have copies of the license to change your name? I didn't know that. It will probably be awhile before I get around to changing mine, but that's good to know in advance.
  • Yep. We had to go to the courthouse and get our marriage certificate to do the basics : SS card and DMV license change. I believe the banks also required the certificate. It seems everyone else was content with a license or social security card.
  • I had a newlywed bride/friend tell me this.  So good to know!  It's been a year for them and she's still working on it also, lol
  • I did mine right away.  I was sporting the ex's name so I thought it best to change sooner rather than later.
  • Just keep your name.  there's no work associated with it, other than trying to convince the bank that you're married and it's okay to deposit things from both of you.
