Snarky Brides

Ang

Can I poke your diet brain about sugar? I was told I need to cut out sugar and gluten (therapist said cut out completely, I'm slowly weaning because I'm a big sugar/gluten addict) and I can't think of anything I can eat without sugar! I swear it seems like every freaking thing in the store has sugar and I'm stuck :(

I normally have a bowl of cereal for breakfast (Frosted Flakes or Cheerios), then a sandwich (gluten), crackers (gluten) and yogurt (sugar) for lunch, and some sort of pasta thing (gluten, gluten, sugar in tomato sauce?) for dinner.

Help :(  (Other people help too, I know Ang is doing the insanity thing and has little knowledge of foods ;) )

Re: Ang

  • I try not to use packaged foods to avoid added sugars and artificial sugars. My favorite sweetener is stevia, which you can find in many forms. I use the TruVia spoonable.

I think that Rice Chex are generally gluten free, and Corn Chex have more flavor but might contain gluten. They should both be relatively low in sugar.

I used to make my gluten free bread from a mix (gluten Free Pantry, I think) , and it was really good once I got the hang of it. Then I discovered that i didn't really have  a gluten allergy, so I went back to eating it.

One option for yogurt is using plain greek yogurt and adding your own fruit, vanilla extract, or stevia to it. It has more protein than regular yogurt, and the plain only has the sugars that naturally occur in milk.

If I think of anything else I'll chime in again.

  • If you just stick to produce - which is kinda what I've been doing lately (last night for dinner, I had steamed spinach, watermelon, and then some greek yogurt with some fresh berries in it) - then at least you know you're staying away from gluten and sugar.  It's just so hard to eat like that consistently :(

  • Hurray! That's part of the fun, I can't do artificial sugars because they make my mouth and throat feel gross. I can do honey though, thank god. Without honey I think I might die.

  • So do you want to cut fruits too or just table sugar anf fructose?

  • I do love some Chex Mix :)
  • I like to use Quinoa pasta, as it feels most like wheat pasta than corn or rice IMO. Rice and COrn past have a way of getting overcooked really easily, or maybe that's just me.

  • Okay first you want to aviod luch meats because they may contain fillers. Avoid gravy. Soups make with a roux. Pickes and salad dressing. Kellog's syrup contain gluten. More....

  • Ang, just processed sugar type things. Fruits and honey are ok. At this point I'm just focusing on the cutting down part, verses cutting out completely.

I'll have to try that Sarah. My mom does gluten free pastas which taste ok for me, but Scott hates them so yeah, that's a problem.
  • You can try oats but sometimes they have cross contamination so I would go with something as natural as possible. Make sure it says pure oats.

It's hard to find cereals that are completely sugar free, even my All Bran has fructose, which I was surprised. The thing to do is to find a cereal that is high in fiber and protein.

  • No pickles makes me sad :(

Something tells me my husband is going to rolling his eyes as we're grocery shopping lol.

I love them! I only get the original, not the raspberry or mint. I use low-fat vanilla yogurt to mix with it. So easy. So good.

  • Oh if you want a good gluten free/sugar free protein bar try the Think Thin bars.

Yeah it is. Mom doesn't believe me when I tell her that either. It doesn't help that she gets knocked on her asss if she eats gluten, while I don't really notice a difference. I am curious if I cut down for a month what would happen with my weight though.

Cutting out just sugar will help so cutting gluten will too, maybe. More power to you though. I love me some bread.

  • Faver IDK but they are so smooth and delish. I want one now, nom.

  • My new kick is spinach and feta cheese in a pita half. Sucks :( I can do some tortilla rolls though so I may just have to experiment with wraps instead of traditional sandwiches.
