Dry Shampoos?

Anyone else use this?

I used to use Bumble and Bumble hair powder because they had it in brown, but that brown rubbed off on everything (pillow cases, towels, etc) and I got tired of it.  My then-hair stylist recommended Tigi Rockaholic Dirty Secret and I love it, it smells good and it sprays on clear, but it's $16.  Has anyone tried a cheaper brand?  I saw that TresSemme has one out but it has mixed reviews.

  • I've never even heard of this... I'm intrigued.

  • I used to use dry conditioners on occasion.  They always made my hair look super oily.  I haven't tried a dry shampoo.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • A dry shampoo? All I can think of are the dust baths we gave our chinchillas at the zoo. I'm not sure bathing in dust is the best way to go for me.
  • TresSemme's isn't clear.  It's white because it's cornstarch.  It makes my brown hair look grey if I spray it too close or too much in one place.  It works, sort of.  It smells nice, which is good because I can always smell it even after washing my hair with real shampoo and water and all that.

  • I know of a really inexpensive kind called baby powder Wink

  • It is better than nothing.  I'd say it's worth $3.50.  You just have to be careful how you spray.
  • That's interesting MFJ.  And it just what, disappears into your hair/scalp?  I keep picturing it like it looks like dandruff or flour or, I dunno, cocaine or anthrax or something.

I've done this too.  But it made my hair look awful.  I've also tried just corn starch and it was better than baby powder.

    It disappears.

I shower and rinse my hair everyday, but only use shampoo every other day or third day or so.  This stuff's good for the days I don't use traditional shampoo.

Your scalp will react to how often you strip it of its oils.  If you shampoo every day, your scalp produces more oil than if you don't, eventually.
  • Rockaholic is what I use occassionally, but it does make my hair lighter if I spray it too close (which can be good if I'm due in for highlights).

  • This might sound like a stupid question, but why not wash your hair everyday?
What benefits do you get from not?  I'm not trying to be a smartass, I'm just genuinely curious.  My hair is black and I would think putting any kind of powder substance in it would make it look strange.

My hair is really long, and it's color-treated, and washing every day strips away the oils that keep my hair healthy.

I used to think I couldn't not wash it every day, but like Pirate said, once you stop washing so often, your hair produces less oil.  I started doing every other day, and now I only wash it when it looks greasy, which is usually after 3 or 4 days.

Most hair stylists recommend washing your hair every other day at most.  My hair is thicker and shinier and has less split ends since I stopped washing it daily.

My hair is pretty thin so sometimes I'll shower the night before and use the dry shampoo the next day to add some volume. Or if I style my hair one day and it still looks great the next except for my roots, I'll shower but not wash my hair and then I'll use the dry shampoo.
  • Why not wash - catching the 5:45 am train everyday!

Anywho, I have tried two dry shampoos and one was much, much better than the other.  I think it's SG (Salon Graffix?)  It has a big SG on a white can.  It's at drugstores.

I also tried Tresemme and didn't like it so much.  It did leave like an overall white look to my hair.  I was so embarrassed because I usually put some in when I get to work (I've walked over two miles at that point, so naturally the hair gets a little icky) just to add volume and take away whatever grease might have gotten in there - and then I went to the bathroom and noticed that my hair just looked white on top.  It has gotten good reviews by magazines, but I would recommend the SG kind more.
  • Interesting, I might have to look into this too.  I wash my hair everyday because it looks greasy if I don't.  Washing every day adds 15 mins to blow dry and 30 mins to flat iron because it's so thick and unruly.  If I could add an extra 45 mins of sleep a couple of times a week, I might be less of a grump :)  good stuff

  • Y'all are making me happy to have short hair. I wash it every morning and just open the sunroof or stand in front of a fan for a while. I have to wash mine every day because I sweat like a pig when I work out. Also, I can't stand the way it feels by the end of the day, much less the next morning.

Using a sulfide/ate free shampoo is also gentle on my hair, so I don't worry about using it every day.

Oooh that's a really good idea.

My mom has thick curly hair and she did the quit shampooing thing.  Her hair looks great.  I'm jeal.

  • DMiller- if you're worried.... I have super thick curly hair.  I used to use conditioner every day, but shampoo only a few times a week.  That alone made such a difference in my hair.  Rinsing the roots got the 'grease' out, but the conditioner helped cleanse the rest of the hair too.

Now, I only wash my hair about every other day.  It's nice, because then I can justify higher quality products.
  • I used the newest Tresemme one, which is a spray for normal or dry hair.  I didn't like it at all--it made my hair look more greasy, which defeats the purpoe of using it.  It does smell awesome, though.
  • I use the Rockoholic too.  its the best I have found and worth the money.

The Tresemme is ok, I dont like how it sprays wet.  But I have blonde hair so I dont know how it will be with brunette.

I also LOVE the Sammy one.  But they stopped carrying it near me.  I used to get it at Walgreens or CVS but I cant find it.  That one was AMAZING.

I am the same with my hair, its thick and wavy and I bleach it so if I wash it everyday it will fall out.  I do every 3-4 days and shampoo it 3X.  My hairdresser told me to do it like that when I first went to her with mangled hair.  It has made my hair so healthy now.

Although when I have my period it gets oily faster and I have to wash it every other day.

[QUOTE]it's REALLY difficult for me to skip shampoo. my hair is blonde, fine, thick, and mostly straight with some cowlicks and nasty waves mixed in. it's like the worst combination. i have to ponytail it if i don't wash. and if i get it wet, i have to blowdry it. i wonder if the good brand of dry shampoo would allow me to wear it down if unwashed? maybe ill try it out when i find a job.

    Try the Sammy or Rockaholic.

Your hair sounds like it would be perfect for the dry shampoo.

  • im a brunette and have use the tresseme dry shampoo a few times so far, i think its OK. make sure you shake it really good, and try not to brush your hair for a while after because it can leave some flakes in your hair. other than that, it makes my hair less oily and have more volume. its cheap too.
