E-Readers

I want one for Christmas. Which one is better/do you prefer? Has anyone used the one that Borders is now putting out? Ugh, I don't even know where to start.

Re: E-Readers

  • I think  I'm putting a Kindle on my Christmas wish list.  i've been comparing it with the Nook and it just overall seems better.  Although, no matter which one a person seems to have, they all seem to love them.  I don't think you can go wrong wither way.

I was just reading this comparison:
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20009738-1.html
  • I have the original Kindle and I LOVE it!  I read on it every day and it is great for traveling.
  • Another thing to keep in mind is to see what e-readers your local library supports.  I know if I want to check out an electronic book my local library only supports the Barnes and Noble e-reader.

Also some e-readers don't work well outdoors in sunlight, you can't see the screen such as the IPad.  I know the new kindle and the Barnes and Noble reader both don't have a glare.
  • Oooh I didn't think about libraries using e-books.
  • I love my Kindle.  Love it, love it.  And I believe Amazon is working towards more free content and elibrary compatability.

It's easy to download new material, either from the computer or the Kindle itself.  It's easy to hold and read, and I don't mind that it isn't backlit.  In fact, I think being backlit would cause more eyestrain.

  • I have a kindle and love it! The only thing I'm bummed about is that it doesn't have the book lending feature that the nook does. I think it would be nice to trade books with people and whatnot, but I'm still super happy with it.

I love, love that it isn't back-lit so I can take it to the beach and read. That's a major downfall to the ipad, imo.
  • Yeah not all libraries are on board with that yet.  A lady I work with, her library does not offer rental or e-books yet so I just gave her my library card number because you do everything online.  And no late fee's because it automatically disappears after the rental time is up.  There is not a massive selection for free rentals.  I think that will change in the future though once e-books gain in popularity.
  • I didn't know library rentals was even a possibility!!  I will have to check with my library.

I have a Kindle (the second incarnation maybe), and I love it.  I was concerned about eyestrain, but I haven't had that issue at all.  I used it on the beach this summer, and it worked really well.  I loaded it up with books, and you can even download documents to it.  The Kindle also converts documents to the Kindle format if you email them to yourself.

    Any specific q's?
  • Ditto everyone else. I LOVE my Kindle.  Love love love.  I like that it supports PDFs and will convert files for you for free.  Let me know if you have any specific questions?
  • Can you order books off Amazon if you get the Nook? I'm assuming yes but it's worth to check.

I think I just need to play around with them a little more. I still love my paper books, but I just have so many that I think it's time for a E-reader.

Has anyone dealt with customer service with them breaking/losing charger/cat eats it? I always worry about that kind of stuff with electronics.

I just ordered the latest generation Kindle. I'm super excited.

Sadly, that's all I have for you right now.
  • The lady I work with bought her e-reader the nook from Barnes and Noble and the main reason was because if you have any problem with it you just bring it into your local barnes and noble.  She actually had some problems setting up and brought it in and they helped her.  She says that was the main reason why she bought the nook was she could have a real person help her rather then online support.

  • I adore my Kindle.  Its become an addiction.  I've had a few technical problems and they've either solved it quickly over the phone or mailed me a brand new one via overnight postal service at no charge.  I love amazon and Kindle.

Just a warning.....the ease of purchasing books via the website makes it so you spend a lot more money.  Or at least that's whats happened to me.

[QUOTE]AnySun- I definitely just followed you on GoodReads. I forgot about that website.  But I've been looking for more books recently, so thanks for the reminder :) Anyone else out on GoodReads?

Aprove started a thread a little ways down titled "Readers..." a bunch of us posted links there. I'll have to remember to actually update it now =)
  • Another vote for the Kindle. (I've got the 2.0 version)

FI bought if for me for my birthday earlier this year. And him, being of the engineering mindset that he is, researched practically every e-reader out there before settling on the Kindle. He said that the Nook was pretty decent, but he felt that the Kindle had a little more of an edge over it.

That thing goes with me everywhere! Awesome for vacations. And the text-to-speak function came in pretty handy when I had eye surgery a few months ago. For the first couple of days I wasn't supposed to open my eyes unless absolutely necessary. So my Kindle read my book to me lol. I just wish more books were compatible with that.

  • This thread = awesomeness.  Good to hear about the Kindle, going on my Christmas list also!
  • Aprov, that's definitely my fear lol. Goodreads just showed me that my book series has a ton of books I never knew about, so that could be bad just in one series!!

Anyone on goodreads can find me. Kristiwhomp.

This was my big concern. So I uh, may or may not have torrented 8 gigs worth of books in anticipation.

Yeah, the site I used isn't accessible in the states. You can usually find it if you just google "*title* torrent", but I'd definitely scan them with an anti-virus program.

ETA: FI says he used Demonoid.

  • katie-

I have a nook and love love love it! we can share books if you get oneeee. :) The thing is.. the nook is a bit thicker than the latest generation kindle. My H just got that and its a lot thinner and a bit lighter. That said I think I would have still gotten the nook. The kindle just feels weird to me. I love the color touch screen on the nook. I feel more comfortable with it. Its like a mini computer. Its still very light and I love barnes and nobles. Their customer service is also VERY fast and very helpful!

  • Wait, so how does this book sharing work? I buy a book and can then send you the file for free and vice versa? Because that could be pretty freaking awesome.
  • So, I tried to reply and it wound up in the Hoboken, NJ forum. No lie.

Anyway, no you can't share copyrighted books Nook-Kindle.
  • ahh I must have just had the FAQs for the wireless only when I did my research.  It wasn't the only thing that put the kindle ahead of the nook for me, but for the price I was looking at it did.

I really love my kindle. and my friend that have the nook really love it.  its just a matter of aesthetic preference I think, and small details. overall I think both are great products.

  • see my problem with the ipad is that is not designed to be an ereader.  Its an added bonus for some people, but I  could not stand to read books on that thing.

Its back lit, which kills my eyes after a long period of time- the kindle/ nook are designed to be as close to a book as possible and it looks just like reading a book.  The back lighting also can make it hard to read in direct sunlight.  The kindle/nook need a reading light if its dark, but if you can read a paper or real book you can read a kindle/nook.

I also could not stand reading through my finger prints. It would drive me insane! I am pretty sure about that

  • I ahve the Kindle 2 with 3G/wifi. Love it! The Kindle and Nook are fairly compatible, though if you tend to highlight and make notes I'd go with the Kindle. You can't go wrong with either, though.

The Sony reader also allows you to read lots of stuff in different formats, but I know that's pretty much the only benefit.

With the Kindle you can read .pdf, .txt, kindle format and I think a few others. I've gotten free books from project Gutenberg.
