WR: centerpiece help please

Due to circumstances within and outside of my control, I don't have a florist yet. And (see ticker) we're cutting it close.

I'm hoping to have that remedied by the end of the weekend, but there's a chance that I'll be DIYing flowers. Our wedding is at 11:30am, so time that morning is short.

I'm comfortable DIYing bouquets and bouts the day before, but not centerpieces too. Any suggestions (photos or links are greatly appreciated) for non-floral and non-candle centerpieces appropriate for a brunch reception?

This will be a little bit of a post-and-run. Thanks :)

We're doing cakes as our centerpieces.

I like floating candles sitting on mirrors.

    Did you google? http://www.google.com/images?q=non%20floral%20centerpieces&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1024&bih=544

I kinda like the fruit ones.

  • Oohh, I love the one that MilkDuds posted. And you can always use the apothecary jars for decoration in your home.

  • What about potted plants? Tie some ribbon and voila!

  • I like Milkduds one very much!
This is what my cousin did at her wedding:

  • I like those, maratea.

  • Non floral, non candle centerpieces ---

    - something edible

    - different color bottles in the center of a mirror - or different bottles with a bit of food coloring to oil or bath salt in them...

if you want you can add floralytes to the bottom of the bottles for flair :) (save-on-crafts.com)

(OMIT THE CANDLES in this ONE)

    - different glasses with sand in them

    - or something with vegetables or fruit and vases

Centerpieces with floralytes in them - rock, with martini glasses - http://www.rssmoments.com/blog/?p=62

    Hope that helps :)

  • I kind of like the potted plant idea. We could keep those alive for a while.

Our main color is purple (all shades) with other natural/seasonal color accents, oranges, greens, that sort of thing.

It's been months since I've thought about centerpieces. We had a plan, and that's fallen through, and now I'm feeling rushed. Google has overwhelmed me on this, and that is unusual for me.
  • Are you doing favors you could incorporate into the center pieces?

For H's brother's wedding they had wide round vasey bowls with a thin ribbon around them. Then they had a few candles, but you could easily do a few flowers in the bowls.

  • Hmm we could use apples since they'll be in season.

Ang, I like that collection of potted plants in that last link.

I say non-candle because i'tll be mid-day in a well lit room. Their light will be overwhelmed unless it's an unseasonably dark and stormy day.

    These are our favors: http://www.etsy.com/listing/54315027/100-monogram-letter-bird-seed-favors
  • We're just doing submerged orchids. We'll probably set up the day before with a small amount of water in the vases to keep things alive, then day off drop them off at the restaurant, fill with water, and presto.

That might be an option, you could even do the fake ones cause they'll be underwater anyway.

Otherwise, I really like the fruit idea.
  • I know you said you don't want floral centerpieces, but ours took all of 30 minutes to do. We had 20 tables, so 20 bottles with flowers. We ordered flowers from fiftyflowers.com. It was the easiest part of the wedding- seriously. Here's a picture:

This was at our table, but all of the other tables also had wine glasses with votive candles in them and corks surrounding the bottles.

ETA: We did our centerpieces DIY as well... we got bulk flowers from costco.com and all of them were used, not one was damaged! If you don't have a membership, you can sign up for a free 3 day membership :)

  • kp I keep coming back to that sand layers photo, it's really interesting.

Submerging flowers could be an option. Depends on what types we can get, I'm determined to use as local as possible.

Maraeta, FI would love it if I told him we had to come up with 25 empty wine bottles and lots of corks in the next month!

I should have said this to start with, but we're looking at about 25 round tables.

  • Ha, oh yeah. About all those empty wine bottles- we asked my aunt and uncle, who drink a bottle a day, to keep their leftover bottles for us. I had been saving corks for a while, and my grandma has several gallon bags of corks she used for crafting. The wine glasses also came from my aunt and uncle.

[QUOTE]Pirate, we have about 100 wine corks that I'd be willing to send to you. Drink a bottle of wine a day until your wedding...make it work!

If you want you can add floralytes for a glow other than the daylight... :) I can help drink wine and send you bottles :) LOL, I'm sure if all the SB's contribute, you'll have wine bottles in no time hehehe

As for the sand - I saw this as well, photos you might have plenty of ... purple orchids?, and some shells?

  • I'll get in on drinking wine for contributions too!
  • Ditto on the branches, and I think spray-painted ones look really cool. FYI: Dollar Tree has tall cylinder vases right now.

  • Here is what I used, Pirate. You could fill these with caraffes (sp?) of juice instead of wine, or use smaller buckets and put your favors in them. I weighted them down with river rocks and tied a ribbon around them with a couple of leaves and hey were DONE! Easy and cheap!

  • http://offbeatbride.com/2007/02/non-floral-wedding-centerpieces some inspiration.

A friend of mine used simple vases with 2 stems of orchid sprays and 2 roses:

it took NO time to put together, and looked really nice. It's a little hard to see in the pic, but she also had some of those decorative stones in the bottom of each vase to add a bit of color.
