HRM

This is a P&R because I have a meeting in 15 minutes but I'll check back when I'm done.

Does anyone have a Polar HRM?  My new insurance plan is offering 25% off and the two I'm looking at are the FT7 and FT40 (there's a list of six different ones to choose from, but these two sound like the best options for me).  Anyone have one of these (or one that is similar) that can offer a review of sorts?

Re: HRM

  • I have an RS100 that I've had for about 5 years. It just died last year. Probably just needs a battery but I'm too lazy to send it back. If you change it yourself, you void the warranty. I love Polar, especially if you have a coupon.

  • Yes!  I have a Polar F4 and I love it.  It's going on 3 years old, no problems.  If I had to do it again, I'd go at least to the F6 becauase it has a backlight.  Great devices, really helps me track how hard I'm working and makes my push myself when needed.  You'll love it-lucky you getting a discount!

  • I have a Polar, but I dont' remember what number, sorry ;) But mine was cheap ($60?) and I still love it. It didn't track a lot of stuff, but I didn't want/need that. I was able to set my max HR and it would beep when I reached it.
  • I have the FT7 (with chest strap) and love it.  It's been a huge help in keeping track of my calories burned.  I deliberated for ages before settling on this one.  I'm glad I did since I think it's just about perfect for me and basic fitness needs.

I just got the FT7 after my last one the F7 I think died, and so far I really like it. My only complaint is I can't see my heart rate and time elapsed at the same time like I could on my old one, really its a lame complaint.
  • Thanks guys!  Sounds like the FT7 is a pretty good choice.  I'm glad to know they last a good while.  I don't want to shell out the money (granted it's not outrageous but still) for something that's going to die in a year.

I have one, but I don't know about the model number, it has a chest strap and a watch that beeps when I'm below or above my target heart rate. It can also do interval timers (for walk-run training), track calories burned, and a few other things that I never used.

Edit: Forgot to tell you what I think about it. I like it, it's always worked well for me. I think it did malfunction once, but my shirt somehow got in the way of the contact points.

  • Just a warning, if you'd never used a HRM before, don't freak if you are out running and randomly your HR is like 325. That means the person next to you has a Polar too, and y'all are not dying. My former running partner and I used to encounter that issue when we had to run really close together because of congestion on the trail. It was freaky.

  • Thanks Achi!

ha, Sarah!  Thanks for the tip!  I haven't used one before so that's good to know.  I'm at a point now where I can't lose anything (I'm on my last 10 pounds) and even though I know the fitbit is fairly accurate, I want something more specific not just calories counted based on how many steps I take in a given time.
