How do you clean your couch?

I have micro-fiber.  Anyone have any fail proof methods?

I have heard soapy water, rubbing alcohol, and ammonia.  But they warn that too much wetness can cause the fibers to harden.

My dog threw up on my couch today.  I used a small amount of soap on a damp face cloth but Im freaked out that it didnt completely clean it :(

I should add that the couch is dark.  Chocolate brown.

Microfibre is really difficult to clean. We have leather (although they're old and not particularly pretty, they are very easily cleaned) for that reason.

Hopefully someone else is more useful on this topic than I! We threw out our microfibre couches last year- they constantly attracted cat hair and were impossible to clean.

  • They have that stuff at Petsmart for pet accidents, vomit, urine, feces etc. They stuff with the enzymes.

Spray some of it on, let it sit for a few minutes and then gently rub it with a soft bristled cleaning brush. Once it's dry, go over it with a dustbuster or vacuum. If you have a bristle brush attachment, that would be perfect.

  • Vinegar and water works too.  The vinegar also helps nuturalize the smell of the puke (or pee, etc.) so the dogs aren't attracted to that spot again.

What's wrong with the puppy?  We woke up to dog puke this morning too. Dumb dog ate a sock again.  We're pros and cleaning up puke now ;)
  • I used to have microfiber and Furniture Row gave me some cleaner with the sofa purchase. I have no idea what was in it. Our couch now is from IKEA so I just unzip it and throw it in the wash. THe inner cushions are a bitch though.

  • I have a cream color microfiber couch, along with two kids and two dogs... What was I thinking?

We had our sofas professionally cleaned and were shown that it takes two steps to get the stains out.  The first part is to blot up the stain with some kind of pet cleaner for urine/vomit.  Spray it on, and then blot up the excess with a light colored towel.  When this is dry, get a fabric upholstry cleaner (we use resolve) and lightly mist the entire area.  Use a soft cleaning brush or towel to wipe down the area.

The deal with microfiber is, if you only clean one spot, then you get a stain in that one area.  So if there is one small stain on my cushion, I end up misting the entire cushion.

  • Our couch is microfiber and we bought the warranty package with came with a care kit.  I would bet you could buy a care kit from a local furniture store, or I really wouldn't be surprised if Walmart or Target had something to clean microfiber either.

P.S. my cat threw up for the first time in months this weekend.  It was a full moon over the weekend, so maybe that's it?  I have no clue.
  • I worked at a furniture store that sold microfiber furniture.  We always recommended an upholstery cleaner like Folex, which you can buy at most big box stores and/or hardware stores.  Use the method described above by JenGin.

  • After you clean it, be sure to Scotch Guard the hell out of it. It stinks like stank for a while, but totally worth it when stuff like that just slides right off. I did that with my microfiber couch, and a couple of weeks later my friend spilled a jar of pickles on the couch and it just beaded right up.

  • For a second there I thought you said "How do you clean your crotch"?
  • I know this isn't helpful, but all I could think of when I saw this was that febreeze car wash commericial.
