In all fairness, I think I might appreciate it more if I reread it as an adult. It was our summer reading assignment in the ninth grade...

• i really liked hunchback of notre dame as well.

Hugo babbles a lot about the city of Paris, and it gets monotonous at times, but, the story is really good...and super depressing.

I feel the same way about my geek card! I cannot for the life of me make it through the Lord of the Rings. I've tried so many times... but everytime a hobbit bursts into random song, I want to feed it to a dragon. :(

I'm embarassed to recommend books. I used to read smart-people-things, but lately I'm all about the trash.

Oh, I thought of one!

I love Isabel Allende. She writes in Spanish and her books are translated into English. House of the Spirits is probably my favorite, but Daughter of Fortune and its sequel, Portrait in Sepia, are great as well and probably better known.

For lighter "beach" reading, I adore Jennifer Crucie. She writes romance, but in a very tongue in cheek sort of way. Her characters are colorful.

• I love Shakespeare, but mostly because of my professor. He was about 5'5", wore cataract sunglasses, a visor, t-shirts from the 1980s and 1990s, and little shorts every day. In the winter he added sweat pants and a zip up jogging jacket. On top of a dynamic and interesting wardrobe, he was blunt, to the point, and knew his shiit. I LOVED him.

I've been out of school for a year, and I still haven't been able to recover from reading all the time on subjects that I didn't care about. Unless it's Harry Potter...I can't help myself there

I've been looking at the Nook, too. Apparently, B&N is syncing up with the largest text book company in the U.S. so college students can have access to books for class. I wish that happened before I graduated. Would have saved me tons!

I like some Shakespeare. I love Hamlet and enjoy Romeo & Juliet. But others I ciould do without.

I think I was the only English major at my school who couldn't stand most of the "classics." I don't care to reread Twain or Faulker a million times or quote them every chance I get. The only Faulker I like is As I Lay Dying, which apparently in the snobby English world means I have no taste in literature (according to my class at the time, at least).
• I took TWO Shakespeare classes in college - not because I thought he was a genius, but because the professor was a pushover and they were two of the easiests A's I ever got in my life.

But were they worth two entire semesters of surrounding myself with Theatre majors fellating Shakespeare? Today... I cannot be certain of that.

• To contribute for others, I just read Lord of the Flies and plan to do Slaughterhouse 5, and some of the Dune books (I've only read the first one.)

• I also have to add that Faulker lived here in Oxford, and his house Rowan Oak is absolutely beautiful. So I guess that makes MS have no taste as well? lol It wouldn't surprise me with as often as we are the butt of a lot of jokes.

• Oh, and Night_Sprite I realized I forgot to put in my recommendations. I'll probably sound like a geek for this, but I love The Odyssey, Theogony, and Prometheus Bound. If you're not into Greek history and the gods at all, then feel free to ignore. It was my minor and I can't get enough of those books.
• I was also an English major who wasn't crazy about the classics. I was into contemporary literature. And the OED. I am going to read it someday.
• Prometheus Bound is a good one. I have a Latin Minor, so I was very into mythology for awhile.

Oh, no, that's not what I meant. I meant that the people in my class thought As I Lay Dying was one of his worst books and that I was a fool for it being my favorite. I was saying that they thought I had no taste for liking the novel since it "clearly" isn't one of his greatest works.

Whatever, I love that book.

Gotcha. I smell whatcha steppin' in now. I wouldn't take English classes seriously. A lot of those people live in the "book world" and don't know about reality on the outside. At least that's how a few of my profs were.
