Quick questioon HELP!

Don't you have to be a registered Rupublican or Dem to vote for the Dem or Repub ballot? I am catching someone in a lie

Re: Quick questioon HELP!

  • Yes.  In my state at least.  Unless you are undeclared, then you choose your ballot.

  • Yes for Colorado too.
  • I think it's like that in most states. What a lying liar.

  • I think it is not true in ND, but everywhere else you must be registered to vote in the primary.

  • This is what she said

I heard more than one Democrat say they voted for him, since he's likely to be the weakest against Obama in the fall. I wonder how much of a boost he got from that.

  • What state, Ricks?

  • He is lying.  You have to be part of the party to vote for its candidate.

  • When we voted for the primary, they just asked us "do you want dem or rep?" I swear in the past it was already pre-decided based on how we were registered, but they actually asked us this year.

  • I'm pretty sure it depends on whether your state holds open or closed primaries.  I think here, you need to declare by a certain date to be able to vote in that party's primary.
  • it is a state by state issue. In Texas you choose which ballot you want on the day of. There are often conspiracies about one party voting in the other parties elections to screw with the outcome.

    MS.

But when we went to vote yesterday, the polls we separated because we had a Democratic election too, so I am sure it's required you register but I don't want to call someone out and be wrong.

  • Actually Ricks, MS has open primaries, so like Nates said, they get to choose which one they are going to vote for.

My state is closed primaries.  19 states have open primaries.

  • Ricks, you are in MS, right? You can vote against your  party in a primary.

This.  It depends entirely on the rules of the state.  In some states with open primaries, Santorum had robocalls going out to registered Dems asking for their votes in the Republican primary in order to advance him ahead of Romney (the idea was that Dems would view him as the more fringe candidate and support him against the more electable Romney).

  • Hmm, this site might be helpful, although I can't vouch for how accurate it is. This says that Mississippi has an open primary, which means you don't have to declare an affiliation before voting in the primary (unless I'm misunderstanding).

  • Wow I guess she is right. Pretty fucked up...
    image
  • Oh, apparently parties can determine whether they hold open or closed primaries, it seems.  I see some states, like CA, with a closed designation for one party and a semi-closed for others.

Also, some states have semi-closed primaries, which means that unaffliated voters can go in and vote in a primary, but affliated voters must vote in their party's primary only. NJ is a closed primary state.

I feel like this should have the "more you know" rainbow attached, lol.
  • Hahaha I know!
    image
  • Theoretically, if you lived in a state with a closed primary, couldn't you register as a Republican so that you could vote in the Republican primary, but still BE democratic and vote for Obama in the presidential election?

I mean, that would be a very dedicated saboteur.

I missed this part but yes I agree. I just think she's lying anyways. She's an extreme liberal so she longs for Obama to win this year. IDK.

  • Here in GA we pick the day of.  When you go in they ask you "republican or democrat"

I guess it does depend on your state

Do you get to vote in both primaries?  If not, how do they cross check that?
