School Dayz

My school just had a fire drill with no warning! With 1600+ students we usually get a heads up, unless someone pulls the alarm. There were kids EVERYWHERE and considering we had never had a "rehearsal" they were really bonkers. I can remember having them at my grammar school, but the school was so little, it was always pretty calm.

So it made me think of a question. What do you remember about your school days? This is a P and R. Gotta get the crazy kids to lunch. Their going to pump them up with chocolate milk and I am sure someone brought some hot chips. So the afternoon will be one for the books.
And the whole time, my future husband was in the room...... image image

Re: School Dayz

  • Isn't the point of a fire drill to practice what would happen if there were a fire? FIres are usually unannounced, so this is probably more accurate, right?
  • My last day of 11th grade biology, we had someone call in with a bomb threat. They evacuated the school for half the day. It was awesome.
  • I'm gonna have to agree with Steph. While it makes sense to do rehearsals, real fires aren't planned it seems like your school should probably do more/better training on what to do when a fire actually happens, especially since children were "EVERYWHERE"
  • My grandma worked in the lunchroom at my middle school. It was awesome because I got free cookies (they had the best warm chocolate chip cookies) and never had to wait in the long freakin line for a burger because the woman who ran the station was an old family friend. Good times.

  • In elementary school, we'd have earthquake drills, and even had a truck and trailer come that was set up like a classroom, but would jerk around so you could feel how an earthquake feels. We also had to bring in a gallon ziplock baggie with stuff like crackers and fruit leather for snacks in case we got trapped in our classrooms because of an earthquake.

Sophomore year of high school (the year after Columbine) we had numerous bomb threats called in, and they arrested the kid who did it when we were in Sophomore English together. I remember thinking "No, not David! He's so hot!" LOL.

  • Fire drills are mandated by law, and you don't need to be informed about them.

NY and AR basically say you have to have one once a month.

I've worked in 6 buildings and have never seen a disorganized fire drill, even if I didn't know about it in advance.

If the teachers and kids don't know how to handle something as basic as that, no wonder your test scores are low.

In my 10th grade chem class, my teacher (she was a nut) thought it would be a good idea to set off fireworks in the classroom for an annual celebration she did. She succeeded in setting the ceiling on fire, filling the hallway with smoke, and bringing in the cops because people thought bombs were going off. This was maybe 3 months after 9/11.

  • I remember hurricane drills where we all had to get underneath our desks.  I'm not really sure what a dinky little desk would have done if I a tree fell on us.

I also remember seeing three of my classmates arrested my sophomore year for being accessories to murder (they were there when it happened and watched).  It was scary.  They will be out of prison in a couple years because they were minors at the time.  The guy who actually murdered the kid was arrested at the same time at school with the gun on him.

I can see this.  I was an editor on my school newspaper and often spent lunch and free periods in our advisor's classroom -- along with the entire rest of the newspaper staff, lol.

Courtney, weren't you the one saying that your administration was threatening to fire the entire faculty if test scores didn't improve?  A smart woman might take that as a sign to get off the Internet.

You know, that I think about it, I did hang out quite a lot with our band director and my color guard instructor outside of school and during lunches, so I guess it's not too far of a stretch that the Glee kids do the same with Mr. Schue. I wasn't thinking of it from a fine arts perspective, but from a regular teacher/student perspective.
In Response to Re: School Dayz : Well we don't have them once a month, thank goodness. But at the beginning of the school year, usually before the end of Sept., we have one that we are aware of. They do this because we do have more than one buliding and some of the kids aren't in the same buliding that they were in the previous years. So those kids have no idea where to go. It helps to know because we are in the middle of a very busy community and there are houses all around us. We don't like the kids to just get out there and not know where to stand and where to meet their teachers. I don't work with the best behaved children, yet I have no behavior problems when they are with me, but some teachers' classroom management is not where it should be. That causes chaos for the rest of the children. Now that they have had their first of the school year, we should be cool for the rest of the year. Hopefully we won't have any when there is 4 feet of snow on the ground. Ugh!
    Posted by MISSCOURTNEY20
Of course no one plans one during snow - that's why most principals like to do a bunch at the start of the year and then at the end of the year.  It used to feel like we had one every other week, although I know it was less than that.  A lot of it would be based on the weather.

Wait, let me get something else straight.  You don't WALK your class out?  You just let them go outside and find their teachers?!??

This seems to be an administration/teacher problem.  It's not the students' responsibility to know where to go.  They need to know how they are expected to behave and the teachers guide them.  Every building I've been in (and 3 of those had more than 1,000 kids) the kids went to different places based on the CLASS they were in.  It is not their responsibility to know where to go, although signs must be posted in every room (again, by LAW...if 2 states have it, I would assume that most do)...the teachers tell them where to go.

Again, this baffles my mind.    Either your school is awful or you're making this up.

  • We walk our kids out unless it is at break since we usually aren't in our rooms then. If it is at a break time, or before or after school, the kids know to go to their designated meeting spot. If it is during class, the teacher that has them walks them out to the spot that is associated to which ever classroom they were in. That's what we do. In the snow, rain, sun, -20, +20.

OMG I would never talk to my teachers about sex or bullies or anything like that.  I got into a fight in French class (not a fist fight, like a verbal smackdown) with my bf's ex gf and I was totally embarrassed that my favorite teacher overheard me say "I'm pretty sure my bf knows the difference between having sex and not having sex, and I promise he wouldn't brag about having sex with YOU."

Oh, and my calculus teacher referred to one of my classmates as my boyfriend because she saw us making out at prom.  That was fun explaining to her that he wasn't my boyfriend.  She also asked me what "tripping balls" meant. . . Poor Mrs. H.

Get off TK and start teaching. If your test scores are low and there is chaos in the classroom during a fire drill your kids need more attention, and by sitting and Knotting all day, you are not helping them. I don't care if it is your planning period. Spend the time planning so your students have a better chance of success. My mother was a teacher, and she would be horrified by your behavior, as am I. • We had two mandated drills a month, fire, Code Yellow and Code Red (evacuation/threat to the school).  None are announced, even the very first one, because that would defeat the purpose.

I went to Catholic school, but I always wanted to talk to my teachers after school.  Of course, I was also in a dozen activities and got to know them well through that.  In 6 years of teaching, I can say that I've always had a group of 5-10 kids that seek me out and talk to me before/after school.  It's not that weird--some kids just need to be around an adult that will be a positive influence and give them some attention.

Miss C is consistently called out because she doesn't answer the questions.  That's why it keeps coming up and everyone puts their complaining pants on.

It does vary by state/district, but yes.  My school has certain sites blocked.  The phiolosphy here is that teachers are granted somewhat free reign on the internet when they are not teaching.  I personally do not Knot unless it is my assigned lunch period or after school (for instance, if I have to stay for my extra help hours, but no kids come).

There are always ways to track where people have been online, unless they're using an outside internet source, right? If I hacked into unsecured wireless, the school wouldn't catch that, I'm thinking, but I don't know.

ETA: And by here, I mean in my own district.
To the other teachers/former teachers, aren't computers in the classrooms monitored somehow? I'm sure it varies by district, but I just don't see how she can be doing this much TK posting at work and no one knows! I have several teacher friends and some of them can't even get to g-mail from the computers in their classrooms. The ones who have take-home laptops don't do anything personal on them for fear the school will view the browsing history. I think there is a lot going on in her school/district that needs changed.  GAH!

I completely agree.  She said once that teaching-related forums are blocked, but the knot isn't, so her school is obviously okay with her knotting on their time.  Uh-huh that's some screwed up logic right there.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

<div>I realize this is dragging it out a little... but two things:</div><div>
</div><div>I've said before that I (obviously) Knot at work.  But who cares? If I don't get my sh!t done, I stay late to finish, or I do some at home.  When you're a teacher, you only get a certain amount of time with those kids.  You damn well better be using it to teach.</div><div>
</div><div>Second... I've just come to the conclusion that MC is just one of those people who will never take responsibility for herself, unless she gets caught.  Wasting welfare to finish a degree when she was capable of working? Knotting while teaching just because it's not blocked at school? Taking her kids to McD's 'often' because "at least they're eating, so she did her job."  Any one of these probably wouldn't' bother me too much... but all of it together just doesn't help my opinion.</div><div>
</div><div>But then again, this an internet stranger I'm judging, so I really shouldn't care either I guess.</div>
  • 1) My school has 1830 students. We have 1 fire drill per month and no the teachers are not informed of them. We also have them all winter long and the kids are told to keep their coats with them in case of an emergency. Their lockers aren't big enough to hold coats anyways. All people are out and in the building by 10 minutes. Discipline the kids and life is good. You can start disciplining the kids by getting off message boards while you are getting paid to teach.
I get it, you don't have to hover over their shoulders every time, but at least do something productive to your job. I spent most of my day researching different teaching methods for our teachers because if I ever got on a site like TK my asss would be handed to me, and I'm just tech support. Don't bitch about not getting paid enough or having too much work to take home when you are wasting the time you have in the school.

I remember being somewhat disturbed by our emergency response (aka bonb) drills. Take a bunch of kids, put them into the football stadium (which is enclosed by locked 20' high fencing) and hope nothing happens. We did one after Columbine and all just stood around going "is this like fish in a barrel?"
