Giraffes!

You know you want to see them. It's SB's mascot! These are my pals from the zoo that I'm gonna AW because it's slow, H is asleep, and I"m bored.

Me with Duke, the head-butter.

Zawati, Duke's girl.

Re: Giraffes!

  • Awwwwwwwwwww. Baby things are so cute.
  • So cute! I want to play with them.
  • Is that a Masai giraffe, kd? We had reticulated but I always wished we would get a masia because they're patterns are so cool. I miss my giraffes. Duke was my buddy. I also miss my goats.

  • AWW! I love giraffes.

I used to raise dairy goats, sesh. hehe
  • Sesh - the zoo here in Colorado Springs (cmzoo.org for the webcam) has the most prolific giraffe herd in the world.  I don't remember how many babies they have produced, but it's in the hundreds.  It's a very cool enclosure, and visitors can buy Rye-Crisp crackers to feed them.  It's awesome.

  • I want a goat! So unfair. One day, a goat shall be mine. Actually, 2, because he/she will need a friend.

Les, don't even get me started on guests being able to feed the giraffes. I hate it. But I'll spare you the rant. I'm going to check out that webcam. I don't know how many babies our zoo produced, but I do know that Duke was the number 2 breeding stud in the US (behind the stud at the San Diego zoo) so any of his offspring were worth a lot. Raffie was his first, but she died. His second, Irwin, they traded for a shiitton of females. Both his parents were wild, which is harder to find nowadays.
  • I know that feeding the animals is a touchy subject, Sesh.  It's carefully supervised, so they don't get skittles and other crap.  As a visitor, I love to feed them, although later in the day they aren't hungry and won't eat.  They are such beautiful animals - I can watch them all day.  Especially the babies.

  • Oh, I know, it's a lot of fun to feed them. The best time to do so is first thing in the morning, for our zoo anyway. When it's done right it's not as bad, but it was a clusterfvck at our zoo. They may have improved it since then, but the damage has been done. I no longer support it.

However, I do love seeing the kids get all excited when they feed them. I like that they are so energetic and eager to learn about the animals. Makes me hopeful that they'll grow up and care about saving animals.
